  • I'm happy to be here.

Hi In 1965 my eye Dr. told me I had dry eyes. At first it didn't bother me at all. Then I went on chemotherapy in 2003. My eyes progressively worsened. My eyes are red. I've been asked if I'm a closet drinker. They are gritty feeling, they hurt, the lids are swollen and red, I have not been able to read for years.

The first symptoms were spontaneous blood bursts. They were blood red. Then came pain, feeling like something was in my eye. My eye could not water cause my tears were thick. My eyes were a mess. When they swelled up like a bubble on my eye. It scared me so bad. It has kept me home most of the time. If I'm out and my eye starts acting up it is so hard to drive. They turn blood red and hurt. Sometimes I will go lay down in a bedroom to rest my eyes. I was worried my eyes were rotting out of my head.

The first Dr. I went to asked me if I used tweezers to separate my lashes. He sent me on my way..then 2nd Dr. 3rd Dr. 4th Doctor was advertised as a dry eye specialist...waste of money. Unless they get DE, I don't believe they will understand. The 5 th. Dr..is better. He ordered prednisone drops, lomax, oral antibiotic heat packs ect..... He diagnosed me with ocular Rosacea. This has been a three year deal. Then he diagnosed me with a condition where you have the driest eyes. It is rare. He said my eyes looked like chapped lips.
    Nothing really helped.

I just found out I have Rheumatoid Arthritis or an autoimmune condition that also causes dry eyes. I started taking restasis about 5 months ago. The consistency of my tears has improved so much that my eyes are no longer being scratched . I still have the other symptoms, my eyes get so tired. Gritty, dry, sore, blood shot, sometimes excess drainage.and some others. Just not as severe. I'm going to try a suggestion I received here. Taking antihistamines twice a day. Miracles do happen. Hopefull

That is what my Dr. diagnosed me with. I don't seem to have the dry mouth or other symptoms , just the dry eyes and blood tests.
