  • RCE & me

    Greetings.

I'm relatively new to the world of dry eyes, as over the past 8 months, I have been walking through recurrent corneal erosion in one eye. I woke up one night with blinding pain, and blurry vision in one eye. My GP sent me to an Ophthalmologist who diagnosed me with RCE, stating that my eye was injured and the fix for it was to perform a Stromal puncture procedure, to heal the eye properly. I didn't like the idea of that, but after a few weeks of revisiting new tears to the epithelial layer of my cornea, I went through with the procedure. Once I healed up, things were better for about 6 weeks, and than the rending returned to my eye. I set out to find a corneal specialist, who confirmed RCE, and recommended performing PK to burn off the whole cornea this time, and allow it to grow back.

At this point, I'm a little risk-adverse. I feel like both procedures seek to treat the symptoms of the issue, and not the cause of the RCE. I am afraid I'll go through with an incredibly painful experience, again, and after a few months be back to where I am now. So I've found this board, and been lurking and buying the products suggested here.

My daily routine has been consisting of thera tears as needed, and muro 128 at night, and occasionally during the day, if I need a heavy lubricant. I've been wearing wrap around sunglasses at work to avoid air movement, but I've been increasingly tired of coworkers comments. If I have a particularly bad day, I wear an eye patch. (When I come home from work, I often wear the patch just to rest my eye at night.)

I have picked up a pair of the Tranquileyes goggles and been using them at night for a week, and also placed a humidifier in my bedroom and increased the humidity to 65%. I have also been taking about 2000mg of flax seed oil a day, and consuming about 1/2 to 3/4 of a gallon of water before bed each night. My eye feels weak, but I am hoping that this aggressive hydration route will lead to healing after a few months.

    Welcome.

I understand your reluctance to get the PTK (or PRK? whatever it is). There are risks to vision each time you do that, and although it can work well, a lot of people get recurrence anyway.

Glad you've got Tranquileyes as that can be a help with the important role of keeping the lid secure at night so you don't get those sudden movements that cause erosions. If it isn't snugly holding your lid down in that eye, I'd suggest adding some more padding to it. I'd also highly recommend Dwelle (or FreshKote which is sold on prescription) in place of the Muro 128 as in these really stubborn cases it does a really good job of getting the layers of the cornea to rebond and heal up preventing further erosions. Takes quite a bit of time - and you'll see plenty of stories here about that.

      Hi, PFoster.

I, too suffer from RCEs, but I have not had one in over two years. I use Dwelle every four hours through the day (and, yea! it's back in stock), TranquilEyes goggles at night with Genteal Gel (severe formula in the tube), and I usually take a really hot shower before putting in the GG and on the goggles.

I should note that it took me almost a year to rid myself of RCEs. I have never had any surgeries.

Be patient if you go the non-surgical route. It can work, but it takes time.

Let me know if I can be of any help. Feel free to PM me.
