Hello! I'm Krista and I'm brand new on here! So happy to have discovered this website and forum... hoping to be able to gain more information & suggestions from other patients than what I've found so far from seeing different Dr's, and hoping to be able to be helpful to others from what I'm discovering along the way!
My most urgent search is for someone/somewhere who can make custom moisture chamber goggles.
I have dealt with dry eye since I was a child (for over 20 yrs now), however; it has become increasingly more hindering to even the most basic of daily activities (and on some days, even just having my eyes open) within the last couple of years, and is now finally to the point where I am DESPERATE for some relief and ability to gain my life back. The severe dryness has caused the muscles around my eyes to get so tense the majority of the time (from squinting from the pain that the dryness causes), that they've caused muscle knots in the surrounding areas of my face, head, and neck, and I have been suffering from migraine headaches as a result, which has caused me to not be able to work, take care of our home, or really do much of anything I need to be doing in my life. So, I'm aggressively looking into more treatments/procedures than what I've been recommended/what's been available in the past (including a lipiflow consultation that I have coming up this Monday) to get at the root of the problem (which SEEMS to be some type of meibomian gland dysfunction- although no one has been able to tell me yet whether it's lack of oil layer production or clogged glands), but in the meantime am desperately on the search for something that can protect my eyes from the drying, artificially-heated indoor air that we have going on everywhere in Chicago right now and from the the irritants IN the air (dust, etc), in attempt to manage the dryness/pain/migraines, etc.
I have tried some types of 7eye brand frames and have more styles on their way to one of my Dr's offices (to try for fit) currently, but part of the issue is that I have a -8.25 Rx in both eyes so many companies who make special glasses for dry eye say that their frames cannot accomodate that high of a prescription. Is anyone familiar with an optometrist/optical lab (preferably in the Chicagoland area, however I'm willing to go wherever necessary) who is capable and willing to make custom moisture chambers for that high of a prescription?? My main concerns are NEITHER appearance nor cost, but rather functionality.... as far as fitting me properly to preferrably create a complete seal AND being able to hold my prescription.
I have been creating a makeshift moisture chamber by putting saran wrap over my regular glasses and sticking it to my face in order to keep out the air and dust and everything else.... have just been hesistant to venture out in public with my special little mask, lol, so would really like something a bit more "socially acceptable," however actual "fashion" is not really a concern at this point.... I just would prefer to be able to wear something that is actually designed for the eyes/face vs for leftover food. I would greatly appreciate any recommendations that anyone has!! Thanks!
