  • MGD since 2 years, 23years young

    Hello

    Introduction:
I am 23 years old and live in Austria. Iīve never had problems with my eyes until February 2011. I felt on some days (5-6 days a month) some irritations and burning in my eyes after a long day in the evening. So the symptomīs appeared only at night. That started gradually to increase month by month: So I felt the irritation more often and even longer.

My eye doctor told me that i have a high pressure in my eyes so he gave me some drops to cure it. That didnīt help and he suggesting me a laser therapy. I agreed and had the laser therapy in May 2011. My dry eyes were still the same after. Nothing has changed! In June my eye doctor gave me some dry eye drops which have helped when my eyes really burned in the evening. I felt immediate relief.

But then it just gradually got worse and worse...month by month. I visited a couple of eye doctors even private ones and went to dry eye specialist in our ambulance in Vienna. Everything what hear is: TRY THESE DROPS THEY MAY HELP YOU! In some way I fell treatened as a fool from the doctors. It seems that nobody understand what Im going through...Iīm 23 years old and need my eyes much more years. It cant be that I have to deal with that my whole life ?

It is so difficult, Im working and studying, but I am so close to give up my job, because my eyes are getting worse and worse. Iīm fighting everyday with dry eyes. The morning is the worst part, where I need a few hours to get to normal and btw no drops help even for 5 minutes anymore. The only thing which gives me relief is wash my eyes and forehead with cold water for 20 seconds...

Iīm wearing glasses with a very low dioptre, but in the last 5 months it increased by a lot, and Im getting red veins also :/...How far is this going ?? Nobody knows how to help me ?? This really feels like on a sinking ship, where there is no hope in sight

Hereīs a list what Iīve tried:

Eye drops: Oculotect fluid, hylo comod, Artelac Lipids MD, Systane Balance, netramitram(Ayurveda), acular, oculoheel, Thealoz 3%

    Spray: Tears again

Ointment: Hylo Gel, Cornergel, Dexagenta-Pos, Oleovit,

Supplement: Acetylcysteine, Thera Tears, Ashwagandha (Ayurveda), Triphala Ghritam (Ayurveda), Ocuvite

Treatments: Eye accupuntcure (J. Boel), warm-Ghee bath, pouring warm oil down the forehead 30min, hot compress and cleaning the eye lids with: baby shampoo, soap, blepha gel, blepha sol, eye yoga, vacation

cleaning my eye lids didnīt really give me relief, thats why I think I donīt have blepharitis (1 doc said I have and the others say I only have MGD)...

Nothing really helped me except: (hylo comod in the beginning) and Triphala Ghritam & Ocuvite which Im using still. The weird thing is that triphala and Ocuvite gave me relief for about 3 weeks and after that everything got back to normal...I just cant understand why ??? On the other hand at least they helped me getting to some point back to normal not for a long time but still a difference.

This is what Iīm trying right now, maybe it will work

    Special Smoothie:
    Hemp Milk
    Portein Powder (vanilla)
    Camu Camu Berry Powder
    Dry Goji Berry
    Flax Seed Oil
    Coconut Oil
    Hemp Oil
    Pumpkin Seed Oil
    Walnuts
Cinnamon.....alltogether mixed in a food processor (a bit of everything)

Are there any suggestions you can give me on my way...? Are there any other young people living my situation ? I really donīt know what to do anymore...

    Bojan

          Hi bojan,

for me Triphala made a huge difference in the first weeks either. I thought I was getting cured, then things got worse again

But I thought with myself: if Triphala really helped, even for some weeks or a month, and if its a detox supplement that acts in the guts, maybe my dry eyes has somethng to do with the guts. So I have paid attention to digestive system and nutrition. I can't say if my eyes are better or it is just the summer.
I had lasik and my dry eyes possibly have a lot to do with lasik.
Since Triphala has helped you, one way is trying find out if there is somethin wrong with your guts, flora etc. But is not easy to find a doctor or health professional to do it.

I understand perfectly what you are feeling (the sinking ship metaphor). I make the same question to me: will I have to live this way til the end? Everyday is a fight, stressfull as hell. I'm exausted, with chronic fatigue, I'm barely able to work.

I have the same problem with doctors... they just give me eye drops, and all make my eyes worse, or in the best view give the 5 minutes relief you told.
I will try plugs or sclerals, or serum drops next.

            Bojan,

To answer your question, there are people just like you out there....me for instance. I am 22 now and started having issues when I was 19 which hit their worst at age 20 and now at 22 I am going on 2 years of pain.

First I would like to mention that EVERY day, I have dry eyes. However, some days are nearly unbearable (I can't even open my eyes without being in pain) and some days I can honestly admit are just mildly bad. In any case, I have been doing a lot of research on this for the past year now. There are a couple things I can say to maybe encourage you:

            1. There are a few drugs out there that are probably within a year of being released
            2. WRITE DOWN the different treatments you can try and give them ALL a try one by one (this reminds me how many things I haven't tried yet)

Based on what you said, I would add the following treatments to your routine:
            1. NAC (search for this in the dryeyezone.com search bar because people are talking about this a lot)
            2. Lactoferrin
            3. Take a probiotic (this has helped me a ton)
            4. Take a daily vitamin (this has also helped me a lot)
            5. Use eye ointment at night
            6. Ask an eye doctor if Azasite would be helpful for you to use for your MGD
            7. Ask an eye doctor if doxycyclin would be helpful for you
            8. Ask a doctor to check your lashes for demodex. If you have them in excess, use Cliradex and find a doctor who specializes in this. The leading person in this is Dr. Scheffer Tseng. I emailed him to ask him if he knew of anyone in my home area who was an expert (because I didn't want to fly from Chicago to Miami, Florida to see him and he responded by email immediately and gave me the name of a doctor in my area he has worked with. Perhaps there is an expert in Austria who can look at you.
            9. Ask someone if you have your eyes partially open when you sleep at night. If you do, use soothe eye ointment at night and find a way to keep your eyes shut. (I put a sleepmask on, which I have put a chin strap on to keep it secure. Then I put a goggle looking mask on top of that.
            10. Drink water(200ml/day)
            11. Sleep for 8 hours
            12. Keep a log of your eye issues. Where are you when they hurt? What are you doing?

Hopefully some of this may help. In any case, I feel your pain. Viel Glück!

Did u mean u wash ur eye with water ? This will wash out and destabilize tear film. sorry if i misunderstood.
Anyway cold water on lids may further block glands . though it feels nice .

Can u buy baby eye wipes . i do and they r so gentle. no preservative or sodium laureth sulfate .
Theratears gel drops r great for redness i find. and love hypotears ointment for night.

Bojan, What was this laser therapy? Was that an ophthalmologist treatment for the eye or for the skin?

                  I forgot to say:

Did you try moisture chamber glasses? They are the only thing that really helps me. They are freaky and ugly, but help to keep our sanity.

I was told exactly the same thing, and I was afraid of doing that, but it is the only thing which gave me relief...For me itīs unbelievable, but as long as it works.
A different doctor told me that it is fine to that (maybe I forgot to say: When I wash my eyes I close them and then wash with cold water over the closed eyes)

I read somewhere here in the forum that AMX drops are not treating MGD ...and I think they are not yet avaiable ? is that right ?

And what exactly is doxy ? I only found and anitibiotic...but if itīs that, do you think it will help me in my case ?

And cod liver oil Iīve never tried, but sounds interesting (just googled it) I will give it a try

And I think chamber glasses works for almost everyone. At least in my case I can't imagine how I would be surviving without them.
