Hello everyone, this is Jimmy. I am from Melbourne (Australia). My story began in November when I was suffering from hay fever. I started using OTC antihistamine eye drops and oral tablets.I also used a steroid OTC nasal spray few time during November and December and stopped using them in mid December as the hay fever symptoms were gone. Then on new year's eve when I went out with my friends and had a couple of drinks. We were out all night and by morning my eyes were really dry. I have never had LASIK or wore contact lenses. I recently finished my studies, and I was now looking into getting contact lenses. I made an appointment with optometrist, who asked me to get the eye test done. During my standard eye test I found out that I need new glasses as my prescription changed slightly.I chose to go for contact lenses.
On my first consultation, I told them that ia m feeling that I have dry eyes. While trying contact lenses my eyes got bloodshot red, so the person asked me to make another appointment and use Refresh eye drops in the mean time. I bought refresh eye drops from them, went home and used them for few times. Also I started searching online about dry eyes and got scared using too much of eye drops due to the side effects of preservatives in eye drop. I stopped using eye drops and started washing my eyes with tap water whenever I felt they were dry, and it really helped.
Fast forward to second consultation, again my eyes were really irritated while trying contact lenses so the optometrist checked my eye lids and told me that I have MGD and said it's quite common and told me to use warm compresses, eye lid wash twice daily for two weeks and it will go away. I managed to get the contact lenses in and by time I got home my eyes felt so irritated that i took them out and threw away. After few days dealing with dry eyes and doing warm compresses I made an appointment with an ophthalmologist. I went for the appointment where he used yellow dye to check my eyes under a special light. He told me I have enough tears and don't have dry eyes. only a bit of inflammation due to the lumps under my eye lids. I told him that the optometrist said I have MGD but he refused and wrote me a script for FML steroid drops. Walking out I was so happy to hear that I don't have dry eyes and that it is only inflammation that will go away with eye drops he prescribed me. I bought those drops same day and started using three times a day as told by the doctor.
A week after using the eye drops I was no longer feeling dry eyes and my eyes were back to normal. I totally forgot the feeling of having dry eyes. But the skin around my eyes was itchy and bit whitish. I checked for side effects of the drops that were prescribed for me and I did not feel like using them any more after reading the side effects. So I stopped using drops and my eyes were still normal until I went out on an evening and had a beer with my friend. While coming back home I noticed that my eyes got dry again and I was back to this misery again. Now I use warm compresses twice daily and Fish Oil 1000 supplement ( 2 tablets in the morning, 2 in the evening).I don't notice dry eyes much if I continue doing this. Now I am looking for someone in Melbourne who specialises with dry eyes. I am thinking that use of antihistamine or steroid nasal spray caused it. will it be permanent if it is caused by those? I have searched online and only found one or two clinics, which are run by optometrists. Any suggestions are welcome and I apologise if my story was too long.
Oh and I also suffer from itchy scalp and dandruff, nowadays my face and skin around eyes is also itchy. I also have oily skin on face. could these be the reason?
Regards
Jimmy
