  • Greetings, dry eyed folk

Hello, thanks for letting me join your community. I've been lurking for ages but recently decided I should post my questions.

    My history:
    • 2007 Lasik
    • early 2011 - dry eye symptoms start
    • late 2011 - started restasis
    • April 2013 - lower punctal plugs
    • December 2013 - steroid course .5%
    • February 2014 - steroid course .5%
    • March 2014 - doxycycline for ocular rosacea 100mg 2xd, baby shampoo eyelid washes
    • April 2014 - 10 day course 1% prednisone drops

Since 2011, I've used a humidifier sporadically at night and mostly preservative free drops, and gel drops at night. I limit myself to 4-6 drop applications per day, aside from the 2xd restasis. I also try to use wet compresses and a facial steamer but I'm not as rigorous about these measures as I could be.

Most of this time I was treated by an optometrist who I like, but I decided to go for a second opinion from an ophthalmologist in March. I am transitioning my care to him now. He hasn't been very critical of the optometrist's approach, and thinks we've nearly used all the available tools. However he did suspect ocular rosacea, referred me to a dermatologist who confirmed it, and I'm annoyed the optometrist didn't notice that. I saw him again this week and he doesn't see improvement to my eye surface although I have less of the hair-in-my-eye sensations lately. I have a recheck in June and he said if there's no improvement at that point he might refer me to a specialist who can treat with autologous serum.

Thanks in advance for the welcome! I'd love to hear more info about handling ocular rosacea, and how autologous serum has worked for anyone who's had it.

    Hi Eva,

Welcome! Thanks for sharing your story. That's great that the MD noticed the rosacea. It's only relatively recently that ocular rosacea has even been talked about... awful lot of people used to go undiagnosed for years.

What are they saying about the condition of your meibomian glands?
