Hi all,
I'm new to the forum and would like to introduce myself. My name is Kevin and I've been suffering from dry eye since February 11th 2014. My form of dry eye is MGD.
My initial symptoms were FBS (Foreign body sensation) with blurry vision (on text) in the left eye. This then moved to the right eye after about 1-2 weeks. I had no idea that I had dry eye at this point. I've seen 2 eye specialists to date. The first told me I had MGD and advised on heat compress to massage the glands and get the oils flowing. The second discharged me from the clinic and said what I had was viral and that it would pass after a few weeks.
As a result of being told it was viral by the 2nd specialist I never thought the heat compress was important (this was all new to me) so I got rusty and inconsistent at doing it on a regular basis.
I continued to work (I am a graphic designer) and just used drops as needed.
2 weeks ago it all came to a head and the dryness was the worst ever. So bad I couldn't actually look at the computer screen for more than 1 second. Even when I walked, I kept my head down to stop the air hitting my eyes.
The physical trauma was tough to cope with but the mental trauma was equally difficult. I felt alone and isolated. My wife and family new I had some sort of eye issue but I truly felt that they a) never took me that serious and b) thought it was pass. I guess as a result of a) and b) this contributed to the isolation feeling. After telephoning the first eye specialist and telling her I was discharged on a 'viral' diagnosis but I really feel I have chronic dry eye. She advised to get to a doctor. She said "They too can look into your eye". I never felt confident in this statement! She also advised to see an optician. So that particular day last week I saw the doctor who referred me back to the eye specialist and also gave me a sick note for the entire week. He looked into my eyes with a touch and said "they look okay to me". I was shocked at his ignorance and lack of knowledge on eye care. He even said "sometimes there is no magic cure to these sorts of things". I said to him "look after researching I understand that I could have this for the long term, this I fully understand but what is really worrying me is my fear over the inability to work". He said to my horror and surprise "sometimes in life if we find that a job isn't suiting us for whatever reasons we should seek a new job". I could have punched him at his ignorance! To suggest that I pack up my job and seek another job which perhaps is less harsh on my eyes was idiot given all the multiple factors involved here.
Anyway, the optician I saw was great. She gave me a great 1 hour examination and advised me very well on the importance of heat compress and massage to get the oils moving.
So I put a plan in action to regularly do the compress. Also, with the help of reading this forum I purchased a pair of moisture glasses. I've just returned to work this week and have the glasses on 90% of the time at work (I take them off at lunch).
I am able to type this thread without much annoyance to my eyes.
The glasses I got are the 7eye Churada. I even wear them out and about when driving or on the streets. At this point I am coping and personally would settle for this. I have a fear that my eyes MGD will get worse overtime and then my eyes will become dry even with the glasses! I really fear this! (I will post this to the MGD section).
So that is my introduction. I hope that some parts are of some help to you and look forward to contributing to the forum.
Kind regards,
Kevin
