  • My story Dry eye & Lasik

I just wanted to introduce myself here. I had Lasik February 1st this year, so I am going on 4 months Post-op. I was -6 in each eye. Now I see 20/15. The Procedure went well, however I had a minor complication the first night as I woke up with my eye guards stuck to my mattress at 4am. Needless to say I was terrified! I went back in for the next day check up and though I could see 20/20 I had some wrinkles and had a flap revision done in both eyes. I must have rubbed my eyes during the night. I slept in my recliner for the next week so as to restrict movement as much as possible during sleep. The flap remained in place without issues.

I developed Dry eye about a week after surgery. I would wake up with my lids stuck shut. At this point my eye doctor gave me Optive. The dry eye was terrible at points making me very frustrated and regretful for having the surgery. That combined with allergies and I was suffering pretty badly. From day 1 after surgery I began using non-preserved drops. They were more convenient for me than the preserved vials not to mention cheaper. Well my dry eye has improved and I would describe it as annoying but tolerable. I use drops every 1-2 hours & sometimes less frequently. After doing a lot of research I have switched to non-preserved drops in hopes that I was having a reaction to the preservatives and thus causing my dryness. It seems to be working. I have also added a humidifier to my room at night and began taking flaxseed supplements. I am hoping and praying that the dryness will improve to the point that I could live more normally. I had lasik because I am leaving in February on a Round the world trip. I will be traveling for 6 months to a year. It has been a lifelong dream that is finally going to come true and I would really like to not have to use drops constantly while traveling.

    Hi

I too have had LASIK, four years ago. I still suffer with dry eye though in some regards its got a bit better, but other days are still bad. I've learn't to manage it through wearing glasses and staying away from dry air.

There is a good chance you might recover by February but if you haven't booked the tickets yet you might want to leave that till nearer the time to see how you are. You have to consider travelling on an aeroplane is very hard long distance as the humidity is zero and lots of air flow movement in cabin. i can take about 2 hours ok with wrap around sunglasses on. ALso if you are going to a hot country then there might be air con and celing fans that are avoidable. Give it some thought. I am sorry you have this.
