    Hi there !
I'm very new to putting myself out there online but am willing to try this for the sake of getting some advice. My story goes like this: I started seeing my opthamologist almost four years ago for red, irritated eyes. He tried treating me for allergy - no change. Over the next 2 years he tried all kinds of things. 2 solid months of Restasis did nothing. Punctal plugs were a new kind of torture. Apparently my eyelids turn in more than normal and everytime I moved my eyes they scratched me . Couldn't get those out fast enough! Testing showed my eyes were moderately dry and he finally sent me to a corneal specialist with his blessing. Shortly before I went, I had seen my dermatologist and asked her about ocular rosacea since I flush easily and there is a strong family history of facial rosacea. She gave me some Oracea and told me to ask the corneal specialist. He'd never heard of it (Oracea) and told me to give it a try. He also recommended good lid hygiene and hot compresses ( orally-no details or written instructions). He didn't seem really sure but said that he thought I had ocualar rosacea. A year later when I went back he asked how I did with the Oracea. All I had at the time was samples and he never prescribed it. Then he said I needed to try it again ( apparently he learned about it in the years time) and I did. I noticed a change almost overnight this time. I have reduced my use of eye whitener drops from 8-10 times a day to around 4-5. They and the Oracea are the ONLY thing that give me relief and allow me to go out in public. I am a teacher and can't look like I'm crying all day ! I can't stand fans on me or the air/heater in the car. I practically cry in big stores and malls - my eyes get irritated immediately. I also have had seborrheac dermatitis on my scalp for as long as I can remember and was recently diagnosed with autoimmune thyroiditis. I tested negative for Sjogrens disease and am at a loss as to where to go from here. The corneal specialist only wants to see me once a year. I would like to try other things and wonder about tests like the TBUT which I don't think I've had and the possibility of MGD. I am doing warm rice compresses now that I read about them on this site and am using Occusoft lid scrubs ( again I'd never heard of them or been told about them by a doctor). I live in the Buffalo,NY area and would LOVE to hear of a good doctor who would take some time and try to get to the bottom of this.

    Hi, Alli.

I'm sorry to hear about all of the pain you've had and the lack of knowledge / concern you found as you tried to get doctors to help. That is a familiar pattern to a lot of us here, including me.

I am not sure what your underlying cause is, and you are so right to want to get to the bottom of it. Someone here with lots more knowledge might be able to make suggestions for talking to your doctor.

On thing that might help with being outside and in large stores is a pair of moisture-chamber glasses. They seem to help a lot of people here.

Let us know as you find things out-- the cause, what works, and the like.

One more thing, Alli, you said you are looking for a good doctor to look over your problems. Our own Dr. Latkany has a section here where he answers questions and he is located in New York City. I know Buffalo is a ways out from NYC, but that info might give you something to think about. Lucy
