  • Wearing me out!

Nice to be a part of your community...but must admit that I wouldn't be here if I were not desperate for ideas on how to beat this.

    A little history:

All previous treatments from specialists (5) have failed. Have had punctal implants in lower ducts, used Restasis for over a year (created more pain while using and never had any positive results). Used many prescription and over-the-counter drops with no relief. Experimented with many recommended vitamins/supplements touted for dry eye relief with no noticeable effects. Visual acuity and perception are getting worse as the pain also increases.

I don't have diabetes, heart disease or any other commonly known causes. Otherwise very healthy and active in competitive tennis and golf, as well as ballroom dancing...although it is becoming harder to enjoy anything with the chronic pain.

I have never worn contact lenses or had any kind of eye surgeries or injuries.

I get NO relief from anything and have had no relief in over 4 years (started noticing pain when I was 56 y/o). It is worsening and is very painful almost all of the time...except thankfully not while sleeping at this time.

I have come here as a last resort to see if anything will help. This is awful!

    hello

read your post and can sympathize - I have had dry eyes for 30 yrs - so I am pretty old at the game - recently suffering from dry mouth - no sjogrens - so I am out on a leaf too....

Hope you find something - Have you tried going to one of the specialists recommended on this forum

      Bless your heart BBB....

Can't imagine 30 yrs. of this awful pain. Do you ever get any relief? If so, what helps you the most? I can't seem to find anything even for temporary relief other than closing my eyes...but as soon as I open them the pain is back.

I have not been able to go back to any doctor, much less a specialist due to being unable to work steadily...and now having no insurance at all.

      Thanks for your good wishes.

        eyehurt,

Since you don't have the $$$ to go to a doc right now, have you tried using a warm rice baggy on your eyes two or three times a day? It does wonders for me. I can actually feel the meibomian gland oil in my eyes once I remove the baggie and it is heavenly. Just a thought. You can really just take a very warm washcloth and do this two or three times a day for 5 minutes or until the washcloth cools. You may not have meibomian gland clogging issues, but this might be worth trying... You're in my prayers...

          Hi Judy,

Thanks for the tips. I have never used a warm rice baggy. Dumb question but do you just put rice in a sealed baggy (cooked or uncooked...water or no water) and then heat it up in a microwave oven?

I have tried warm moist rag compresses and get some relief while using them but only lasts a few minutes before the pain returns.

Have you ever heard of a small electric heating pad being used over the eyes for more continuous balanced heat? What do you think?

And thanks for your prayers...all of you are in mine as well.

            Hi eyehurt,

You're welcome! Actually the warm rice baggy can be made with a CLEAN sock (with rice inside), or something similar. Of course you can buy the official one in the dry eye shop, but if you're trying to save $ you can make one yourself. Somewhere in this site, there is a write-up on how to make a rice baggy and use it, but I'm at work right now and can't take time to search for the link. I've never heard of using small electric heating pad on the eyes, I guess you would have to be very careful on that one! I'm sorry for your pain... Keep cruising around in the dry eye zone and you will find out all kinds of useful information!

Thanks Judy. I'll give the rice baggies a try.
