  • looking for dry eye eyedoc in europe

    hello,

i'm aware that this question has been asked a lot here already, but i'm just going to give it another try. Does anybody know a good (preferable the best) dry eye opthalomogist in Europe? I myself reside in The Netherlands and i can go anywhere within Europe. If there really isn't a good dry eye specialist to be found here in my part of the world than i have plans to go visit dr l in New York. I've already seen a dozen of opthalomogist in the course of 5 years that don't know the first rhing about des. I'm quite fed up with that.

    any suggestion is highly appreciated!
Hope to hear something soon from somebody of this community.

    thanks in advance,
    patrick...

      Hi Patrick

When you say `the best' - this is so subjective. I have seen several over the years and would describe my consultant as `the best' of those I have seen so far. This is largely because of the relationship we have managed to forge.

Like many other ophthalmologists, he hasn't got all the answers. The reason I see him for routine appointments is that I use steroids and I'm on autologus serum - both of which have to be supervised.

He doesn't dismiss my frustration like some of the other doctors did. This may not be down to him as much as my improved assertiveness. He's a relatively young doctor; ambitious and keen to learn. I'm a hardened dry eye sufferer; not quite a `battle axe' but I think he's learnt quite a lot from my case.

        Hoi, Patrick!

From what I've heard, Prof. Christophe Baudouin at Hôpital Quinze-Vingts in Paris is concidered to be one of the best docs on dry eyes in Europe. I've been a patient of his since 2007 (I travel all the way from Norway to Paris once or twice a year to get a check-up and to buy Restasis). For the first time my dry eye problems were taken seriously, I got a proper diagnosis and I got hold of Restasis (which you can buy at the hospital pharmacy). A consultation cost 150 Euros.

In the beginning I had problems communicating with his secretaries as they were only speaking French, but now he's got a secretary that speaks fairly well English and that is also willing to communicate with via e-mail (works better than calling).

If you got any further questions, don't hesitate to send me a mail!

        Groetjes uit Noorwegen,

        Toril :-)

          Good Luck.
I'm for sure gonna try to get an appointment with him. Paris is fairly nearby for me. A 5 hour drive from where i live. Best thing to do is to combine it with a short visit to the beautiful city of Paris.

          thanks!
          regards,patrick...

That's the way to view things Patrick!

I wish we were nearer to mainland Europe.

Good luck and perhaps you could let us know how things go.

              best eye doc

              hi irish eyes,

i fully agree with you about what is considered a good opthalomogist. It is subjective. The first and most important thing is that your situation must be taken seriously, and that is where things mostly go wrong. I've seen many doctors over the years and my main complaint is that they refuse to consider dry eyes as a serious matter. For example my last visit to an opthalomogist :waitingroom time over a hour. chairtime 5 to 10 minutes. This was only a slitlampexamination,no schirmers,no tbut. Just looking a bit and writing down a presciption for eyedrops (oculotect, vials pres. free). And have a good day! I was well prepared for a good conversation with this doctor and had a lot of questions for her and wanted to discuss what treatmentapproach would be best for me. Nothing of that. There was just no time left. She shook my hand and before i knew it i was outside again. And you're quite right that it is important to establish a relation with your doctor and go to various options together. Unfortunately this has never been offered to me in the past 5 years by any of the opthalomogists i visited.
(by the way,my tbut is 7 sec, schirmers 12 mm in 5 mns). lasek induced des. probably posterior blep. aka meibomglanddysfunction.

              thanks for reading!

              regards,patrick...

                Hi again, Patrick!

I'll send you a message with the contact information of the secretary of Prof. Baudouin.

I also combine my trips to Paris with a holiday. It's such a beautiful city, and I've become a big Paris-fan and have even started to learn French! :-)

                Greetings from Toril

                  hi,

Well the UK is not the other end of the world as well. have you ever considered to combine a vacantion in france with a visit to dr baudouin?
No luck with finding a dryeye doc in the Uk?
I sure like to visit The Uk sometime to see your beautiful countryside!
I'll let you know how things went in France. But i'm still in the very early stages of planning an appointment. I only just heard of dr baudouin yesterday. Another poster on this site Toril offered to give me some information about a trip to France,so i'm going to pm her and learn about her experiences.

                  regards,patrick...

No Patrick, it's not that great a distance at all. Before the advent of the internet, I would never have dreamt of seeking help beyond these shores. When I saw that other people actually did this, I had already sought the opinions of so many within the UK that I felt worn out & exhausted. Having said that, a couple of years ago I was being considered for clinical trials in Coleraine (Ireland). Paris wouldn't be any harder to get to would it?

I think at the moment, it's probably less to do with geography and more to do with avoiding any disappointment. Hopes for something better can so easily be dashed. But again, I could combine it with a visit to the Louvre, La Rive Gauche....

                    The idea is taking root!
