Dry eye doctors in UK - my experience

I'm still looking for one. I went to the emergency room four years ago with an incredibly painful eye which I now know was a corneal erosion, the first doctor gave me antibiotic drops- and that was it. I went back later that night in profound pain, the second doctor peeled my dead cornea off with tweezers, filled my eye with goo, gave me a patch which he said to keep on for a week, then use antibiotic drops.

I had a bad abrasion just before Christmas and another doctor did the same thing, it was more like a blister than a tear so she had to scrape it off this time. When she told me that was what she was going to do, I started crying because I knew that it was going to be even more painful, and for days, than it was at the moment. She sat there for a second, then just left the room. When I asked her if she could give me something for the pain, or something to help me sleep but she said it shouldn't be too bad, just uncomfortable. I don't know why I didn't push this as I knew exactly how painful it would be, but I was on my own and I don't really know how to be pushy with doctors, as I've always thought I could trust them. At least this doctor told me a bit more about what was going on, she said I had to use lubricant in my eyes for at least the next three months to give them a chance to heal properly.

But I had another erosion despite using the lubricant, so I've made an appointment with a 'Dr Bailey' on Harley Street in London, when I called they said they are specialists in corneal erosions and they know how painful and debilatating they are, but not to worry as there is lots they can do to help and they are very experienced. It's not going to be cheap but I really couldn't care less about the money aspect at this point!
I will report back on how it went. This is their website - http://www.eyecarelondon.com/

I just have to let you all know that purchasing the tranquil eye googles is one of the best things I have done for my eyes and a well spent £40. They give me such comfort during the night but they do have to be used several weeks to show the full benefits. I hope these also might be of some enefit to others.

Hello everyone - I'm a newbie and have been reading this thread with great interest as I also live in the UK (London).

Like everyone else, have had trouble finding anyone to understand my problems, they simply say "oh you have mild blepharitis, MGD, and dry eyes - use moisturising eye drops"...all of which irritate my eyes even more, even the preservative free ones.

I'm not terrified of going to any specialist (and I have seen many, both in the emergency rooms and privately at Moorfields) because even the drops they put in to examine my eyes stir up the symptoms.

I'm seriously considering going to see Dr Guillon, whose details Francesco has kindly passed on to me, but even so am apprehensive of what symptoms such a thorough examination might cause to flare up.

We really are behind the times in this country, aren't we?

Last time I was in the casualty department, one of the doctors there said "basically, eyes are for SEEING, vision is what we're concerned with...comfort it sort of secondary..."

Just about sums up the attitude, doesn't it?

btw, I'm so glad to have found this site!

          eyesdry,

I'm really interested to know how you're getting on with your goggles - have you seen more improvement?

          thanks,
          Eva

I am 100% in agreement with all of this. I was treated at Moorfields over a period of 3 years, then told my dry eyes had improved enough to wear contacts. I live in London and can't find a single optician willing to prescribe dry-eye friendly contacts for me, such as Proclear. I have tried on-line but they don't do them in my base curve (9) although I think opticicans in other countries are able to put in a custom order. I have been repeatedly told on this forum by people living elsewhere in the world that I am being cynical and negative about Uk opticians so it was heartening to find this thread! Yes, there are good eye doctors at Moorfields. They do not, however, prescribe contact lenses and why should they? I avoided the horror of Lasik (with a flat cornea and -9.50 and dry eye I would have ended up unable to work if I'd had this) by self-prescribing zero 6 and ordering online. The design has now changed and is less comfortable. I'm trying so hard to get another kind and getting nowhere; it's very depressing.

Dr Michael Guillon great dry eye doc

Dr Michael Guillon is a great eye doc and an expert at dry eye treatment. Make sure you ask if you can try the new Fortifeye Dry Eye Therapy. I have thousands of patients with dry eyes improving dramatically on this formula. Dr. Guillon is the ony eye doctor in England currently using this formula. This is the newest dry eye formula on the market.

Can you explain these results? For example what exactly is so different about the ingredients of the capsules?

1550mg fish oil from 2 capsules. Just 44mg of GLA from Borage seed oil. and 10mg sesame lignans.

It doesnt sound revolutionary to me...but I am happy to be put wrong.

                Regards,

                Rory

                  Dr lange,

Can you also discuss the contrasting benefits of taking the liquid fish or flax or borage oil and a supplement?

Surely the doses within your supplements are very small compared to that which you get from the liquid oil?

For example 44mg of GLA from 2 of your capsules compared with 510mg from one tablespoon of Barleans liquid Omega twin (flax/borage).

                  Thanks

                  Rory
