  • Can alcohol make?

My eyes were feeling ok ish well quite good actually last night i fancied a small drink so literally had only 1/2 pint of cider and i must say it made my eyes feel on fire within 20 mins!

Can alcohol affect the eyes that quickly ,my eyes felt terrible then for another 2 or 3 hours?

    Wish i hadnt bothered!!

Alcohol usually effects me the next day. I don't drink very much anymore, but when I do my eyes actually feel a little bit better while I'm drinking because it seems to numb my senses. However, I always pay the price the next day by being dehydrated and having dry eyes. This usually happens when I have more than just a little alcohol. I have had just a beer or two and experienced symptoms very similar to yours. I really can't put my finger on why just a little alcohol would irritate the eyes so much, but that does happen to me as well.

Alcohol usually hits my eyes within a couple hours of consuming it.

Maybe instead of drinking the red wine, I could pour it directly in my eye. that way, I lubricate my eyes and still get to consume my favourite drop without feeling guilty.

If only it were that simple.

I actually find that alcohol doesn't have that much effect on my eyes unless I consume too much and forget to put drops in before heading to bed then I am almost guaranteed to wake with yet another erosion.

I consume loads of water in a day though - have always done this even before dry eyes, it is nothing for me to drink 6-10 pints of water a day and my eyes are still dry and nasty looking if I drink anymore water, i will feel like a camel.

        Where's that bottle of red??

          No

I agree with Ian. I don't find it really affects my dry eye all that much.

From a scientific point of view we know alcohol causes dehydration of the body therefore should cause reduced water in the tears. But from other postings we know volume of water required in the tear film is very small and dryness is cause by non-wetting.

I think most people have worse eyes after a drink due to general effects on the whole body and decreased well being on the whole.

Alcohol has always had a particularly bad effect on me.

I thought perhaps it was the dehydration plus if one were to have overindulged perhaps sleeping with eyes not completely closed. I've been taping my eyes down though and it still happens.

                Wine eyes

My eyes kill me the day after -- wine seems to be the worst offender, I don't know why. It's turned me into a teetotaler -- sigh.

Certain loved ones go in a bad mood with me if I have even one drink. The latest method is to match each alcoholic drink with a soft one, then make sure I have a big glass of water before going to bed, and one by my bedside.

I think alcohol is an issue with Ocular Rosacea. This may be your situation. Wine can be especially aggravating.

It certainly can make a difference. When my eyes were really bad i used to look forward to going out because when i was socialising and having a drink i would forget my dry eyes. However, if I really went for it i would usually pay with severe symptoms over the next couple of days. I think the other thing it does is make you forget your night time rituals which help prevent bad spells. Having said all that you have to remember that life is for living and if we stop living then DE will have won.
Red wine is the real killer but I just love Valpolicella!

Same here, alcohol does not seem to affect me directly, but makes me forget to put night time drops in and then ouch, another errosion. My Optometrist told me not to drink alcohol, tea and cofee as they all de-hydrate you which agrivates dry eye. Of course I have ignored all that advice and occasionally pay for it.
