    Dr. Latkany,

We're sorry that you don't believe in our IPL treatment for dry eye. In our clinic we have seen positive results that have helped hundreds of patients.

    Dr. Toyos.

A number of us have read with great excitement about your success with IPL. A number of opthamologists are viewing this with skepticism until clinical trials or peer review journals demonstrate results. In fact, a local opthamologist who uses IPL for Roscea was skeptical about applying it around the eye. so can you address the safety concerns?

Also, can you provide the names and locations of any providers you are training to perform IPL for dry eye? I'm particularly interested in the Mid-atlantic area/North East area. Thanks.

Dr. Toyos, I also second kdc66's post. I am excited that a new, effective treatment is out for mgd. But my ophthalmologist is also skeptical - he doesn't think that this procedure is an effective long term solution, and he hinted that this is simply another way for docs to make extra $$ (not that he is complaining about that). He sees sclerals and even the new meibomian gland probing procedure as better treatment options over IPL.

Can you please address the effectiveness of this treatment as a long term solution?

i've had dry eye for 10 yrs. plus, tried everything, restasis, scrubs, massage, you name it, and have had 2 treatments with dr. toyos, and my eyes simply feel more comfortabel than in years. i was 100 percent blocked in meibomian glands.
it is helping. cant wait to get another 2 treatments under my belt. i would recommend the procedure, and feel the toyos clinic is a great place to get treated ...great dr. , great staff...

Dr. Toyos, I would love to try IPL for my dry eyes, but I cannot find a doctor near me who is trained in the technique. Have you trained anybody in the San Francisco Bay Area?

(I tried to contact your clinic with this question but did not receive a reply, so I am trying here!)

          Thank you!

            IPL for dry eyes

I was diagnosed with rosacea in 1986. I have been getting IPL/PDL/RFL since 1994 from multiple doctors at places in and around Vancouver BC. I developed ocular rosacea (and was diagnosed) in 1996.

Since 1994, I've probably had 30 full-face treatments and as many partial-face treatments. I've had 2 levulan treatments. I've had my upper eye-lids zapped 5 times.

I have not noticed that any of the IPL/PDL/RFL treatments have helped my eyes. In the last 5 years, my dry eyes have progressed rapidly.

I believe I'm like anyone here... trying, doing, using everything possible... plugs/cautery, eyemasks, goggles, Rx drops, OTC drops, salagen, doxy, you name it.

I would love it if IPL worked... and I'm doing another group of sessions, but so far, for me, it hasn't helped. Perhaps the day after treatment, when my face is a little swollen, my eyes feel a bit better. But it's right back to terrible the day after...

            Good luck.

I think there has been some improvement in my right eye, but left still really bad, after having 4 1/2 ipls at dr toyos clinic, theres nothing else for me to do any more so i am going to have a few more IPLs in the UK and see if there really was improvement. I know rosacea and ocular rosacea is my problem though. What your describing afterwards when your eyes feel better because your face is swollen sounds like what happens to me everytime i get an ''actue illness'' eyes feel so much better. When i have facial flareups, eyes also feel better then as usual.

Some patients on here are living proof that this procedure works, and anything that can help dry eye has thumbs up from me. Everything is not going to help everyone though, nothing helps me much

Dr toyos procedure is more than just IPL as someone above has already said, he gets the oil out of blocked glands and the glands become less blocked after having the IPL due to the expression from the hot compress

Do you know someone in the UK who does IPL targeted at the Meibomian Glands?????

                    Hi Philipp

I know you adressed Sazy's message - but I've just posted on the `list of doctors doing ****** probe....' specifically in the UK.

I mentioned IPL to my consultant this morning and he hadn't heard of the procedure being used for dry eye problems.

He is a cornea specialist, keen, relatively young and regularly attends conferences where dry eye issues are discussed. He couldn't recall IPL being discussed at any of the UK conferences although the ****** probe was known about.

                      Hi Irish,

Thanks for your answer...Where exactly did you post that list??
I've got an optometrist here in Edinburgh, he is also looking into the Dr. ****** probe thing...

However, for various reasons (including invasiveness) I would prefer doing the IPL. It sounds so much more logical with getting rid of the vascularisation and all...

I just hope it will come across the ocean soon (if there's money to be made is definitely should...). I emailed Toyos and he told me he is considering to certify Drs in both Italy and England (or Scotland) this year...

                        Hi

I didn't post a list - I posted in the section that was named `......list of doctors....' - mainly I suppose because I wasn't too sure where else it might go....! Sorry for any confusion but I fully intended to let people UK people know if anything came out of my enquiries with Rhein Medical in the US.

They have supplied to one ****** probe to an `agent' in the UK - they couldn't disclose details but I managed to find out that the sales person involved is based in the North East - so that might narrow it down a bit.

I'm curious to know who your optometrist is in Edinburgh - is it the same chap I have seen....? I don't live in that city but I went to see him a few years ago on the basis of the claims on his website.

I agree with you on the point of ££££ to be made. The UK is ripe for opportunities of the right kind. I wouldn't rule out taking a few trips to Italy either. (Would they refer to Dry Eye as Occhio asciutto ?)

                          It's this guy here:

                          http://www.edinburgh-eyetests.co.uk/

He told me last November that he'd ordered the set but when I asked him recently how his experience was using them he never replied again so I refrained from pursuing this any further

i was just referring to IPL at a dermatologists. The benefit of Dr ts technique is the expression, but i dont have blocked glands so not sure how useful that was for me.

There is tons of money to be made in dry eye in the UK, there is vitualy no decent treatments (or europe), but the NHS wont fund dry eye treatments because its prob not seen as a op priority. I would have thought other insurance based systems in EU would have restasis etc by now...
