  • new names for dry eye

dry eye sounds so innocuous so i was thinking of other names by which to call it to other people..any ideas? so far ive come up with...

    corneal neuralgia
    constant eye pain
a debilitating disease which i did not know existed
    why me
i've got something in my eye...but i cant get it out
    the opposite of fun
    tear dysfunction syndrome
an eye condition that cant get fixed by lasik
no, eye drops dont help, i promise

My latest - "I have a very complicated condition of the inner lid and eye surface. I'm being treated by a specialist" (this last part helps keep the "why don't you just use eye drops?" comments to a minimum)

Michael, I like 'tear dysfunction syndrome'. Just call it TDS for short. Has kind of a ring to it, doesn't it? Pretty sad to say this if you really think about it, but we have to keep our sense of humor about us!

ha ha Michael, i like this thread!

I had severe dental pain these days, becoz of a doctor who did a root canal and closed the tooth prematurely. So I was actually given morphine injections, the pain was so debilitating.

At the same time with the worsening of the tooth pain, I noticed very drastic deterioration of my eyes which were stinging and watering like they haven't for ages; and no amount of drops would make any difference!

So the doctor noted this, and asked me whats wrong with my eyes; I told him that I have a dry eye, and he was looking at me as if I was talking about something that just can't exist on this earth. He had a puzzled, half smiling look on his face, and said: Dry eye? Hmmm, that is interesting, coz from what I see you have a very watery eye....

I wanted to punch him! He thought i was trying to crack a joke!It can be really hurtful sometimes... i tried to explain dry eye, but he was in a hurry to brush the entire subject off; so I did not bother.

Anyhow, my name for this disorder is: watery stingy burning eye with painful mucous strings that makes you look 50 years older and so much uglier, and makes people ask you weird questions.

                awesome!

How about 'are you sure it's not all in your head?' -that is a good one I have heard from time to time! Always gives me a good laugh!

or how about: Diseasus Introvertus! Since I now find myself to be more of an introvert than ever when my eyes are hurting-

or 'Stay at home with a wet rag over my eyes rather than go to the movies with you' -That one is a bummer!

Just remember: Awesome + Awesome = Awesomer!!!!

I dont tell people i have 'dry eye' when people ask.

I say i have a severe eye problem.... then they ask whats wrong with my eyes i just say, i have constant buring pain and they are dry.

Then if they enquire further (which they ussualy dont), i say dysfunctional tear syndrome, also known as severe dry eye.

                    That ussualy gets them!

Since i have been describing the problem in more abstract terms.. i get alot more sympthay.

If you just say 'dry eye', poeple do not understand the impact of the problem.

I'm seeing more and more documents naming this 'Dry Eye Disease' - and I think this might be a good direction ...

I agree ... adding "disease" to the name certainly makes it sound more serious, doesn't it?

                            dry eye or bleph

Just raed the book from dr latkany, its ok sort of a general thing not really that specific. but gives details about the whole subject. Well is bleph dry eye? or what. Doctors have been saying to me, I've got bleph, In the book it seemed to be 2 different things. Also his explanation about the eye bath seems very very, not really detailed.

                              This is a great topic.

"Dry Eye Syndrome" is like describing a knife fight as a "difference of opinion"

I recently described some DES-related issues I had this fall as "I was suffering damage to my cornea"

I like to put the word "cornea" in there as often as I can.

This winter, I had a major success... someone asked why I was putting eye drops in constantly, and I explained that "my eyes stopped producing tears, so my eyes have no natural defenses and I have to artificially maintain my eye health". this person's response was "sue your parents". that put a big grin on my face
