  • TearScience & funding

"TearScience has intentionally kept a low profile - it doesn't even have a Web site <it does now, see below> - while it focused on developing its devices. The company has applied for more than 40 patents to date."

"It was best to stay under the radar until we had all our patents filed," said Brian Regan, vice president of marketing and market development.

"The $44.5 million raised in TearScience’s series C round is the largest medical technology venture capital funding in the Southeast this year and the largest in North Carolina since TransEnterix raised $55 million in a series B round of funding in October. To date, TearScience now has raised a total of $61 million in venture financing."

Wow. This sounds fantastic. Really fantastic. And the great thing is that this as a medical device they can apply for 501 status for the FDA - which can take months instead of years. I like it.

so, am i reading this article right? is there equipment out there that may possibly give long term relief for multiple causes of dry eye or just evaporative dry eye?

is there anywhere else we can look to learn more about this diagnostic tool and treatment?

          Europeans! missed a impo extract:

Next on TearScience's agenda is marketing of its devices, which have been approved by regulators in Europe. The FDA has approved the diagnostic device, theLipiView Interferometer, while an application for the treatment device, the LipiFlow Thermal Pulsation System, is pending.

Willis said the company will have a slow introduction of the devices in Europe over the next several months, an approach that will enable the company to do any necessary fine-tuning.

I really want to know how this treats the underlying problem though?

does anyone know the mechanism of action, is it just heat or does it decrease inflammtion etc?

Wow, this sort of news make my day. I am glad that this device will happen in the near future, if I am correct, and not way down the line.

Recently, we've heard of IPL and now this new technology. Whatever it is, I am ready for it. Thanks for the post! I am glad to have read it and hope to read more of its update.
