  • How??????

HOW do you get a doctor to listen and try to help??????? It is about 10 minutes after 4 AM and I am up! I woke up 3:00 AM with eye pain!!!! So I called the medical answering system and the doctor gets paged. The doctor who did my surgery was on call. I do get a phone call BUT he is so discourteous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I got told by him that I am "wearing everyone out," "my eyesight is perfect and I know it" "That I am refusing treatment" and so much more!!!!!! He more or less stated "it is in my head!!!!! I was told that I need to have a CAT scan done!!!!!!!!!

PLEASE tell me - HOW do you get a doctor to do something to help!!!!

I am truly coming to the end of my rope!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

    Mabe another doctor

I did go to the clinic that did my operation.
Everything they did was useless, or worsening.
In the end, another doctor helped me.
Sometimes I think they are heartless. They only try to proove that they were excelent, and you are fine, and get rid of you. Before the operation they were so nice, but when there are problems, the became realy nasty cinical and insulting.
Better not to deal with them, get upset about them, or anything.
Mabe you could find a dry eye expert.
Hang on! Put the most effort you can now, on treating your eyes. It is the most important thing.

I am really sorry. Hard place to be... when you're frantic with pain and the doctor doesn't seem sympathetic let alone helpful.

When you woke up with pain were you having an erosion or something?

It kind of sounds like you're beating a dead horse at the moment. Jivgil's really right about another doctor.

I think you may need to do two things:
      1) Find another doctor who is more sympathetic to eye pain and more knowledgable, AND
      2) Change your expectations of the doctor's behavior to you.

Your doctor sounds fairly classic in the sense that what they care about is your vision, not your pain. Since your vision is OK, and (I'm guessing) you don't have signs of dry eye severe enough to threaten your vision, they don't have the ability and inclination to help you find ways to address the pain issue. Sympathy and practical pain management strategies are things most of us are more likely to find here than in the doctor's office, sad to say! I don't want to sound cynical but it is better if you lower your expectations about what the doctor can (or will) do.

If you haven't already, please read this article. It will help you to set some realistic expectations with a new doctor.

I got told by him that I am "wearing everyone out," "my eyesight is perfect and I know it" "That I am refusing treatment" and so much more!!!!!!
What does he mean by "refusing treatment"? Have you been prescribed something that you did not want to take?

He more or less stated "it is in my head!!!!! I was told that I need to have a CAT scan done!!!!!!!!!
That's nonsense. - It is true that anxiety about eye pain will make the pain worse but that's totally different than the pain itself just being in your head.

        Thank You!!!!

Thank you so much for your support!!! It means SO much!

Brief update on what all happened - Yesterday, my husband gathered up all the meds, eye drops, flaxseed oil supplements, vitamins, etc. He drove me into the clinic, with me protesting loudly, kicking and screaming all the 60+ miles!!! I was sure the doctor wouldn't do anything!!!! Woudn't care and just be rude!!!! That it was a waste of time!!!!! (well, you get the picture)

Arrived at the clinic, my husband demanded that I see the head doctor at the clinic. (The doctor saw me once before, was helpful and prescribed TobraDex ointment to use at night and Xibrom at bedtime. That has helpful because I gained a few more hours of sleep!) I got to see the doctor. My husband told him about his rude junior partner and stated "you will do something to help my wife!" Plus my husband showed the doctor all the meds, vitamins and read a list of all the different methods that I had done to try to help myself! The doctor was asked, " does this all look like she hasn't been trying to get better! She has done more for herself than your clinic has! Plus the information sheets from the Dry Eye Zone on the topic of how to get better care from the doctor, my husband read it to him. I was prescribed doxycycl HYC 100 mg, 1 pill 2 times a day, Lyrrica 50 mg 1 pill 3 times per day. Plus hydroco/APAP 500 mg to take at bedtime and to continue the TobraDex ointment and the Xibrom drop. Plus tests were done and I was sent over to the regional hospital where blood was taken to see if I have any autoimmune problems, etc. (4 blood vials were drawn)

Well, I went to bed last night at 7:30 PM and I slept until 9:30 AM this morning!!!!!! I was only up once to "juice" my eye. (that's what I say when my eyes are dry and I need to use drops) It was SO WONDERFUL to sleep!!!!

THANK GOD FOR MY DEMANDING HUSBAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

forgot to tell you - another update

I forgot to tell you - I located an acupuncturist who treats dry eye. I have an appointment upcoming. She thinks she can help me! She has treated others in the past so she is hopeful that I can get help also.

Here's a tip from her - feel your eyebrows, put slight pressure on the different areas. Do you find any spots where there is pain? If you do, lightly massage in a circular motion. This will help dry eye.

            Way to go, hubby!!!!!

I think he's going to be in great demand around here for seminars on "How to be assertive with your eye doctor".

May you continue to feel better and better and get better care!

                Re: hip hip hooray

                You go, girl (and guy)!

Please keep us informed on how your nights go with these new meds. I think there are people (me! me!) who could benefit from info that will help us get thru the VERY long nights of drying out eyes!

                All the best.
