This is from my own personal experience with warm compress to help my mgd condition.
First - What are using for warm compress, wash cloth or rice baggy? I use to do it with a wash cloth but it never helped. You can create your own rice baggy if you do not want to buy one from here.
I got away from doing the warm compress for several weeks and my eyes were always red and bothering me and the drops and allergy drops did not seem to be working and made me wonder why, what changed?
About 2 weeks ago I started the warm compress every night and about 4 days later, my eyes started to look really good, almost normal. The warm compress is followed my eye lid massages (with my finger) and washing my eyes out with ocusoft. It's very important to do the eye lid massages as I found out.
To answer your question in a long round about way, the warm compress loosens up the oil glands in your eye lids and this may be a reason your eye lids and eyes are red and inflamed. This was the case for me. It was hard to believe doing something as simple as warm compress every night would give me that much relief.
I do agree it can make me sad and make me not want to participate in social activities, but this week has been very good for me and the difference was the warm compress.
Feel free to email me on here with any questions. This site is great!

I've wondered the same thing. I have ocular rosacea/ MGD and my main symptom is inflammation. Not only the lid margins but the lacrimal gland area also. (Right below the eyebrow). In my case compresses and massages haven't worked. Its really hard to tell if the eyelids themselves have thickened over time or if they're just chronically swollen. I have my first IPL appointment tomorrow. It's also supposed to improve the
look of the lid margins also.. I hope!!!

Interesting subject!
Hi to you both!
Todd, how do you do your warm compresses? I've been fighting against them because they only seemed to inflame things, but maybe I'm doing them for too long or too hot. Just curious what your "method" is... and then the massage too. I use a q-tip and push on my bottom lid margin but the top lid is tough. I lost my rice baggie, gotta make another one!
thanks and good luck to both of you.

After a warm compress my eyes do look bloodshot and believe this is due from the heat. If I use a cold wash cloth afterwards, it seems to calm the eyes down.
I use a rice baggy and ocusoft foam to clean out the eyes.
For the massages I use my fingers from the upper eye lids and a q tip for the lower eye lids, but I never see any oil leak out. Makes me wonder if I even am doing it correctly.
