  • Need surgery on eyelid and have severe dry eyes

    Hi,
I have severe dry eyes and need surgery on my left eyelid and need advice. I have a mole on the rim of my eyelid that is about twice the size of a pencil eraser. Several eyelashes grow through it. I've had the mole all my life but it was much smaller and barely noticeable until a few years ago, when it started growing. Several doctors have told me it looks benign.
I have severe, debilitating dry eyes that are painful nearly all the time. I have trouble with everyday tasks and being in heat or air conditioning, driving, reading etc.
I believe I need to go ahead and have the mole removed or it soon will obscure my vision. I asked one opthamologist about it and he wanted to remove a wedge from my eyelid, basically cutting up on each side of the mole and then stitching my eyelid back together. I have an appointment Feb 1 for a second opinion with another opthamologist that I understand is an ocuplastic surgeon.
All this terrifies me. I am afraid a procedure on my eyelid will affect my tear film and leave me with worse dry eyes. I am not sure I can even tolerate any procedure. Any advice from pros or patients would be greatly appreciated. I would like advice on any aspect of this - are there other ways to remove mole other than eyelid surgery, types of surgery and other procedures, questions to ask dr., how to make sure the dr doesn't make my dry eyes worse, advice on picking dr., how to convey to dr severity of situation, how to protect eye during procedure. Thanks alot, Marcia

I def understand that you are concerned. Some of the top specialist in my opinion... dr. Pflugfelder at Baylor, Dr Foster at mersi... Rebecca may be able to give to give you a list. I wonder if they could freeze it off.
