  • Oily Glands

I have dry eyes/blepharitis and rosacea. Recently the eye hospital said I have oily glands. I should have asked exactly what that means. Does anyone know if that means the glands produce too much oil or too thick oil. I do the usual hot compresses and lid cleaning. I am awaiting cataract surgery but have been told they won't do it until the eyes are in a better condition. I thought I was doing well, obviously not well enough. I think that sometimes my vision is worse (cataracts aside) because of the dry eyes. Can anyone suggest anything else I should be doing. What about flaxseed
oil or Borage which I read somewhere in connection with rosacea. I take cod liver oil at present. Thank you

Flaxseed can soften oily secretions - not sure about borage oil though. My regimen sounds similar to yours although I take Minocycline antibiotic also.

Some people find heated 'eye bag' helpful but I didn't feel any benefits.

There are several posts on here about expressing oil from the glands - it can be a bit tricky until you get the hang of things.

I have been told that my vision problems are from to much oil in my tearfilm. I wonder if your vision gets worse because of the oily gland that you have. To much oil can be just as bad as to little oil when it comes to vision symptoms..

Thank you Joseph, Having trouble typing this because of vision bad at the moment. What do you do for oily tear film apart from usual hot compresses and cleaning. Any advice please.

I am not sure because if your glands are producing to much oil I would think that the hot compresses would only make matters worse. I think the last thing we need in are situation is to get even more oil in are tears. It is a frustrating situation because I am not sure if I even have dry eyes. My eyes are more sticky and goopy and it looks like I am looking through an oily film all of the time.. The more oily and sticky my eyes feel the more visual symptoms I have. This sounds kind of like what you are experiencing? I am going to the eye doctor next week and I will keep you posted as to what he says about some options for to much oil in the tearfilm.. By the way I have been told that I have blepharitis and rosacea..

Hi Joseph Just wondered how you got on at your appointment at the eye hospital? I have managed to get an appointment for Monday 16th July so will ask about oily glands and appropriate treatment. My eyes having got better after my last posting stayed that way for 2 weeks and are now worse again (8th day), hoping for improvement again in next day or so, This is the 4th time this has happened since April. My cataracts are getting worse and I really need them doing so hoping the opthalmologist will agree even though dry eyes are still not well controlled. Can just about see to type this looking right up at screen. Hope you don't mind me asking about your appointment, and trust you are well.

I have a similar problem. I have MGD and i notice that my eyes always feel oily, but yet i have MGD so they shouldn't feel oily at all. My specialist told me my TBUT was awful so she had me taking flaxseed pills and gave me the goggles to use to help melt the oil glands to help secrete them. This will hopefully work and i really haven't been using them all that much but ill start again tonight.

on another note, if you have any remedies i'd love to hear em!
