  • Safigel CL questions

Is there anyone who may have experience with Safigel contact lenses. There are some older posts about this lens which is a hyaluronate lens. My interest is in piggybacking under a custom GP for comfort and therapeutic delivery of HA to cornea. Can this be used following surgery (PTK) ? Is it suitable for irregular corneal surface? Would be very grateful for any advice. I have contacted the manufacturer for locations of lens fitters in my area. Thank you for your help. Thank you. --Blinks

I wear these. They were much better than AirOptix for me. However, I have a number of doctors who said they had patients try them and they were intolerable.

The theory behind them is great, I am not sure the manufacturing technology is the most up to date. The doctors with bad experiences say the "edge" technology is lacking.

My suggestion is to ask for a two week trial and see how they feel.

Great suggestion and thank you for sharing the information on the edge technology.

Hope to be able to try them out.

Thank you for the advice and feedback.

Indrep... do you know of anybody using Safigel lenses as an overnight bandage lens?

What a great idea Rebecca! Would love to hear about that.
I just got off the phone with Safigel to find a fitter near me. The fellow was very helpful and suggested I ask my doctor to call them and they will send out trials at no cost if my doc thinks I might try them as piggyback under GPs. I'm using Oasis drops and they have made a huge difference in comfort. I'm very grateful to DEZ for Oasis discussion, and especially for Indrep's help. Thank you!

Rebecca, I have had a couple docs try them and thought they were great. Unfortunately the company does not give out samples like the big contact lens companies. The reason this is of so much interest to me is I know some docs who take a 72 hour collagen shield and hydrate it with HA and then place that on the cornea as a bandage lens. This can be pretty expensive depending on shield and type of HA used to hydrate.

Unfortunately my doctor said the Safigel CLs aren't the answer for me for piggybacks. He has suggested I'm a good candidate for a scleral lens. This will entirely vault the cornea but is not a full scleral so I am hopeful there is still a soluton out there for me.

The Oasis Tears Plus continue to provide the best relief for dry eye and comfort with lenses. I can be comfortable with one drop in each eye every four hours and wake without any dryness or irritation which is quite an improvement for me. I am convinced I'm on the right path with these drops.

Thank you again for such a great forum and wealth of information.

Safigel have not been tested for overnight wear as they are intended to be worn as a daily disposable lens and then discarded before sleep each evening. Many daily disposable patients find them to be the most comfortable contact lens on the market and wear Safigel comfortably all day without the need to purchase dry eye drops because Safigel continuously releases HA while the patient wears the lens. With proper fit, and now two base curves available, comfort can be achieved by patients with steeper corneas who may have experienced edge awareness with the original flatter base curve. With well over 40 million lenses produced worldwide, reproducibility is proven and excellent. I'd be happy to put any interested patients in touch with doctors across the country who successfully fit Safigel contact lenses... please send me a private message if interested. A five day supply of trial lenses are provided at no charge to doctors who fit the lens for daily replacement.

To learn more about Safigel's patented hyaluronate-gel technology, I suggest the following Karpecki/Atkins article:
