  • dry eyes and prebiotics

    Hello everybody,

My problem is that I have high myopia (about 10 diopters and 0.75
astigmatism on both eyes). Thus I prefer to wear contact lenses instead
of glasses. About 6 years ago (at age 24) I lost my contact lens
tollerance. That was because of dry eyes and redness during lens wear.

I must say that opticians and eye doctors did not help me at all in
finding root causes and effective remedies (I guess I didn't meet the
right ones). So I did a lot of research in this group and other
websites such as SurgicalEyes. I tried artificial tears, mast cell
stabilizers (against blepharitis, I am not allergic), antibiotics, Lid
therapy for meibomian gland dysfunction, fish oil, vitamines. One of
the most effective treatments of the above was Lid therapy. But it was
not sufficient to obtain contact lens tollerance.

I tried every kind of contact lens, including silicon hydrogels of
every brand and RGP lenses. I feel that RGPs are the best contact
lenses because they give really good vision and do not stuck to the
eye. But I could not really tolerate RGPs.

Then I started to research about refractive surgery but I understood
that there is no good refractive surgery and probably there won't be
    for many years to come.

So, I finally gave up and started to wear glasses full time. That was a
good decision because it helped me to concentrate on my life instead of
thinking all the time about my irritated eyes.

One year ago (that is after 5 years of contact lenst intollerance) I
started to try probiotics and prebiotics. When I tried the prebiotic
Inuline my eyes suddenly started to produce good tears. Inulin is a
natural sugar (oligosacharide) contained in some vegetables like onions
but it is better to buy it in the pharmacy as powder. 1kg costs about
15 Euro and lasts for half a year. It not only makes the eyes tear
again but also makes the meibomian glands work better (I think the fat
becomes less solid and flows through the glands again).

The final breakthrough for me was not Inulin but Lactose which is also
a prebiotic. Lactose is the sugar contained in milk. Strangely drinking
mild makes my eyes go dry. But drinking water with one teaspoon of
lactose powder makes my eyes tear such as Inulin does. And further my
blepharitis disappears completely (which was not the case with Inulin).
Now I can wear RGP lenses as long as I want. I have perfect vision and
    white eyes throughout the day.

This is my story. It took me 6 years of research to obtain contact lens
tollerance again thanks to one teaspoon of lactose powder taken twice a
day dissolved in a glass of water.

Sorry for writing such a long article in my bad english.

    PS:
If you want to try lactose powder please make sure that you don't get
granulate. Granulate contains some resin to form the granulate (also
called "mesh") and it smells like paint. It didn't work for me and
made me feel sick (they use it to press pills). Please make sure to
take white cristalline powder. Last time I paid 8 Euro for one kg and I
just use 2 teaspoons a day. Lasts a long time.

Where can you get Inulin from?

Don't know Sara - Google came up blank.

It did jog my memory on Inulin not being the best prebiotic though, it's not particularly selective with regards to the bacteria it feeds - i.e. it can feed some bad bacteria too, which isn't great.

TBH I haven't got the foggiest what mode of action has helped with regards to the inulin.

I think the previous poster is right. Inulin can feed some bad bacteria too. Lactose powder is better in that respect. You can get both substances in a pharmacy. The pharmacies can order it from their distributors.

          Hi Eric,

Thank you for posting your suggestions. I would like to try it out to see if it might help me with my dry eyes (allergies and aqueous def).

I would like to try the Inulin first because I suspect I'm lactoses sensitive and might have issues with the lactose powder. Can you tell me how much you were taking and the brand name if possible? Also, how long did it take to notice a difference?

          Thanks again.

            I found it on line

Here is a link where you can buy it:
            http://www.dealtime.com/xFS?KW=Inuli...n&FD=0&x=9&y=2

I'm not sure the correct one to buy. But I've bought from this company. So I know it's safe. No affiliation with them, I just buy my B12 there.

I posted this several weeks ago. Is this the same person?

My problem is a poor tear breakup time that makes contact wear impossible. I just got this email from a fellow sufferer. I couldn't find anything on medline or google scholar about these medications for tear film.

              Hi Koneall,

About 3 years ago we had email contact because of Surgical Eyes. I never got the surgery. I participated as SE because I was interested in dry eyes and contact lenses.

Once I helped you get some lubricating eye drops containing sodium hyaluronate.

I did not participate at any of the eye discussion groups since 3 years. I posted also on sci.med.vision.

Koneall, I have found a cure for my problem with contact lens tollerance.
              Could you please read at:

If the link doesn't work, i posted in the sci.med.vision group on August,31th.

Sorry to bother you. I just wanted to share with the SE people but I am not registered

                Hi,

Anyone tried lactose powder or inuline? It is still giving me a great success.

                  Hi Eric,

Two quick questions. How much of the inulin were you taking per day and how long before you started started to notice results?

BTW, it looks like you can buy inulin in any grocery store under the brand name FiberSure.

                    Hey Eric,
would you be able to post any materials on the benefits of inulin or lactose powder on this board? I haven't heard or read anything about this before and I am very intrigued. Thanks

Hi Eric - wow, that is fascinating & good for you that you found something that really helps. I had never heard of prebiotics or inulin and I have done tons of reading on nutritional topics.

Can anyone explain why prebiotics/inulin would help dry eyes and blelpharitis? I am excited to think this would work, but as always my scientific mind wants to understand what the mechanism would be. From the brief reading I just did on prebiotics I don't see what the connection would be.

Are RGP lenses what were formerly known as "hard" lenses? Why are these better for dry eye? I had switched to Proclear compatibles lenses just before I got bad dry eye and they were great dryness-wise. (Then my eyes got too dry to wear anything.) It is my dream to wear contacts again on a limited basis, so I'm eager to find out whatever I can. I have MGD which I think started from long-term contact lens use so our problems may be similar.

I take strong "probiotics" daily the ones that guarantee they make it to the intestines, would this yield th esame results claimed above?

I take probiotics to restore the intestinal flora since I've been on oral antibiotics many times and that caused other problems.
I'd like to know how the "prebitocs" like inulin and lactose podwer work diferently to achive the end result.
I never thought good bacteria in the instestinal tract would help with Dry eyes but if that's the case it'll be GREAT!
I just want to understand more the process since taking food for bacteria also have some risks----> (feeding the bad bacteria)
