  • Promising phase 3 results for Lifitegrast

Sarcode announced the phase 3 results of a new drug called Lifitegrast at the end of October and they look to be promising.

I believe it should come out sometime in early 2013. I hope it works well for all of us!

They still need to get positive results in phase 3 number 2 trial. If they do that it will be soon. But not for another 2/3 years the next trial will take a year then marketing... i dont know how long that takes. Anyone know.

It looks promosing though because the trial had 500 people, and ussualy dry eye drugs fail with larger numbers because dry eye has many causes.

Only thing is, is is this another drug aimed at aqeuous deficiency? another restasis? If so i know it wont help me. I dont know if it will help people with MGD. I dont think any drops going to help me. I just tried Kinerette (which we never hear about) and that was basically useless. Did not reduce my inflammed lids.

      Sazy,

Wow, I did not know there is a part 2 of the phase 3 trial that needs to be done! I hope it succeeds that and comes out soon.

I am not sure if these drops will help the lids but from what I understand, it is supposed to be a competitor to restasis. It's supposed to feel good in the eye too apart from help increase tear production.

Btw, I have Mgd as well but my condition improved after mgd probing. I am not perfect by any means but there was significant improvement for sure. My current problem is my skin does not produce enough oil even though the glands are unblocked. Have you tried using aquaphor near the skin below your eyes? That's helped me.

The results of this drug look promising and thus, I am a little hopeful...

Theres more information about its mechanism of action on this press release:

I would really like to know if Lifitegrast would target eyellid inflammation as well as surface inflammation- and thus help MGD, as well as aqeuous deficiency????

And how does this mechanism of action differ from restasis?

"Most would agree that dry eye has an inflammatory component," she said. "T cells have LFA-1 on their surface all the time. They bind to ICAM-1, which initiates the cytokine cascade. If you could stop the binding and subsequent T cell trafficking into affected tissue, you could reduce the inflammatory response in that tissue.

          Sazy,

Based on an article I read (see link below), the answer to whether or not this will help your eyelid inflammation is NO. In the article they talk about this Lifitegrast. Then in the next paragraph they talk about how ANOTHER INTEREST is with the oils. In my opinion, it seems like they are treating this new drug and "oils in action" as two seperate thoughts. I'm in the same boat as you are with the MGD...bummer.

As for the difference between this and Restasis, based on the few articles I have read, Lifitegrast is supposed to simply feel better. I believe the intended results are identical.

Have you tried Azasite? According to the people on dryeyezone, it hasn't helped anyone really but then again I have read other art6icles from eye docs saying it has helped some of their patients.

Its a bummer if thats the case! so many sufferers with MGD and we dont have a decent medication to treat it. Ive tried azasite, it did nothing. I think it helps clear active bleptheritis infections and thus reducing inflammation that way which in turn helps the MGds. But for people who have MGD and no bleph going on, or have cleared the blepth already and are left with MGD- i dont think it helps, otherwise we'd have many others raving about it.

I have bad inner eyelid inflammation and i dont understand why anti inflammatories dont help. It might be because its ocular rosacea, rosacea isnt helped by steroids or anti inflammatories.
I guess i have more than a few more years to wait for anything that might help then

              Hi Sazy,
I read you had your problems for many years. Have you not be able to get a diagnose at all? SInce you live in the US, have you seen dr Latkany? I think someone should be able to come up with at diagnose? What are your signs, TBUT?
Also, I have seen that you notice an improvement when sick otherwise, is that all kind of illnesses? Just curious, since when I had awful prblems with UTI and urthritis in November my eyes become so much better - I almost thought that I was about to be cured, and were tempted to write in Success stories - but glad I waited.... Now eyes are worse then ever, probably due to the very dry winter weather. I have a TBUT of only 2 and eyes feel unable to keep open in the end of the day, (but sometimes the improve in the end of the day). Mornings they are stuck shut.
