  • Dry Eye Fed Up - please help

Hi - if someone can help I would really appreciate it because I am utterly fed up!!!!

I am 29 yo female, UK. I started wearing monthly disposable soft contacts when I was 19 and at first had no problems and could wear them for long periods of time. Then i started on the birth control pill and my contact lens tolerance reduced, I could still wear them every day but not as long as I had been. At the time no one had ever given me any advice about using rewetting drops so I used to wear them until I felt it was time to take them out because they felt dry. I could usually last about 9 hours.
Then I noticed that when I put them in after waking up my eyes would sting and tear. I told my optician who suggested I switch to daily disposables which I did.
Initially this stinging and tearing up stopped but my eyes were feeling more dry so I was having to take my lenses out earlier in the day or have rest days.

Soon after this a really weird thing happened. Without warning, my right eye would go bright red -all of the white, no tearing or discharge just bright red and I would feel like I had been punched in the face. When this happened, I also felt incredibly tired and run down. Sometimes, the glands in my neck would swell before or during. Sometimes before it happened I would feel as though i had swallowed a lot of perfume, got this horrible taste in my mouth. I could not find a pattern to this eye redness, I could wear my contacts one day and it might happen two days later. It was there when I opened my eyes in the morning, the right eye would be sticky and that would be how I knew it was there before I had seen it in the mirror. Went to eye specialists and doctors here in UK, no mention that I had dry eye, no cause ever found. I gave up contacts for a few years voluntarily. Also stopped using birth control pill.

Now I am still not using birth control pill but wear contact lenses socially. They are hard to tolerate, need lots of rewetting drops. Recently went to my local optician who told me I have blocked meiboiman glands and blepharitis. Told me to do hot compresses, clean with baby shampoo and massage lids. Isn't there anything more that they can do? I am utterly fed up of wearing my glasses most of the time. The most annoying part is I don't even have any real symptoms of dry eye, just that I can't tolerate contacts for more than 6 hours really. So if I didn't need to wear contact lenses, I wouldn't have even noticed that I had dry eye!! No idea what is going on really but I would appreciate any advise on either what might be happening or how I can treat blocked glands and blepharitis beyond hot compress and baby shampoo.

    Thanks so much

My advice, ditch the lenses and pray your eyes don't get any worse. If you REALLY suffered constantly from dry eye you would be very happy to be in the place were you are now. Don't risk messing with them and making them worse than they already are. Sorry, I know that this is not what you are looking for, but if we took a vote I am sure that a good majority on this forum would agree with me. There are many on this forum (I am not one of them) who had lasik to get away from those annoying glasses and now would kill to escape the hell of dry eye and go back in time to those annoying glasses....F/G

Yes i agree with farmgirl best advice - throw the contacts. No matter what u do ur eyes will continue to get worse if u keep on irritating them with contacts . and then the less chance of recovery . get some new glasses and cool sunnies!! and wen they get uncomfortable and hurt ur nose or ears remember it is way better than dry eye pain.

I too have to agree with farmgirl - my story is very, very similar to yours happybertie and I ended up having to completely stop wearing contacts. I kept pushing their limits and my wear time just kept going down and down while my eyes got drier and drier and more sensitive. 3 hours was the best I could do. Now I can't wear them at all (wore them successfully for 23 years previously). I realize how hard it can be (it literally took me an entire year to get used to wearing glasses all the time) but your eye health is worth it.
