  • Long Term Disability / Career Change

As some of you may know I was out on short term for 6 months. Then I went back to work for 3 months. For the first 6 weeks, I was doing OK. Then I hit a "flare up" that I am still in, which is very painful.

Anyway, I am now taking 2 weeks vacation to get a break from work and see if that helps. I am also on Lyrica - and waiting to get to a "therapeutic" dose - which will be sometime mid week- next week.

Anyway - here is my question. Who on this forum has gone on long term disability due to what ever happened to your eyes OR has changed your career?

Any suggestions from those that have gone through this?

    Thanks,
    Tom

Not yet, but it could happen for me in the next year. Waiting to see how it shakes out.

I'm 31... I think I'd go to bar tending school and try that if my career has to go. I work in TV, so it's a scary time for me at the moment.

bar tending school is a waste of money. just look up drinks and learn how to make them. I've never been to the school but worked in philly as a bartender. when people came in with a bar tending "degree" we threw them out.

Hello, I am 18months post eye surgery. I worked in an office, air conditioned, went back after 8 months and managed 2 days before I had to leave the job - too much pain dried my eyes right out. I havent returned to work yet. Hope things go well for you.

I've applied for disability because of my eyes, and also a few other severe diagnoses. I don't know how it will pan out. I applied in January, they are just now getting around to sending me a questionnaire about how I cope on a daily basis, and sent requests to some of my docs for medical reports. Will keep you updated. But I worked as an occupational therapist. I could no longer deal with the recurrent corneal erosions, pain, blurry vision, and frequent eye doc appts. Neither could my employers. Good luck to you.

I have worked in the beauty industry for years when i graduated university. Decided since i couldnt work on a comp, i would work at a salon...long story short ...Hair color fumes + bleach+ perm +hair spray in the air = hellish red eyes! so today was my last day...no idea what im going to do now. I think i am going to take a break from DEZ and computers for now..listen to my doctor and stop comparing myself to others, for now anyway. My mental state isnt good right now...(I mean i am sad..lol nothing severe) i get my sclerals next week. see how it goes. one step at a time.
