  • Blepharitis complications?

So I've been recently diagnosed with blepharitis and I'm quite new to all of this. My symptoms are as follows:

    - loss of eyelashes
    - red and swollen eyelids (mostly left eye)
    - white particles in my eyelashes
    - very dry eyes (think I got a 2 on schirmer test with the yellow drops)
    - red and irritated eyes
    - itching and stinging
    - these past few days I've been experiencing a foreign body sensation, i keep thinking i have an eyelash in my eye but I can't see anything when I look in the mirror. It actually hurts, but sometimes it gets better
    - burning sensation, also a new symptom

All these symptoms have made me very worried on several occasions (before I found out I have blepharitis), I went to the eye doctor several times thinking I had some sort of an infection but they said I didn't and the eyes are fine but only "dry and irritated".

Having blepharitis/very dry eyes makes it hard for me to determine whether my symptoms are related to something more serious or just the bleph. I am very anxious regarding my eyes and I am fairly new to all this so I'd really like some advice on how I can maybe handle this.

My question is: Have you guys experienced complications caused by blepharitis/dry eyes? if so how did you guys manage to realise it was not bleph related and that it was something else? If you have healthy eyes it's a lot more easier to realise when something's not right, but when your eyes are already a mess it's kind of hard to determine whether it's related to your bleph or something that needs to be seen by a doctor right away.

Weird questions, I know. I've been to the eye doctor so many times they think I am crazy and frankly they have been very dismissive so I don't want to go unless it's really something wrong. However, anxiety and new bleph symptoms make me extremely worried to the point where my day-to-day life gets immensely affected. So any advice/help is greatly appreciated.

Hello I have had Blepharitis / dry eyes for four years. Please try not to be anxious about this, as this like stress doesnt help it. A good eye Doctor should be telling you about posterior Bleph ( MGD ) which causes the gritty, lash in the eye , sensation, and anterior Bleph which causes the white flakes sticky lashes. Dry eye unfortunately goes hand in hand with this sometimes, the burning sensation. Try to find an eye doctor who offers treatment specifically for dry eye and bleph and who will help you find the best treatments to keep your condition under control. Its different treatments for each of us, not one that fits all. My treatments are emulsion eyedrops for the MGD, ( Emustil) artificial tears (Systane ) for the dry eye and Lubristil Gel when the gritty sensation is very bad. Also a heated eyebag once a day and cleaning with cotton buds to remove the flakes and unclogg the glands. I take Omega3 to try to help it as well. I have had no complications and my eye doctor is very reassuring. It is a long term condition to treat, so be patient and deal with it day to day.good luck

I totally agree with rm14 and think if you start using compresses, expressing the glands and using scrubs daily that your situation will probably greatly improve. The pain-in-the-neck part of it all is that you need to do it every day, over and over and over for an unknown number of months and years. I must do compresses two or three times daily to keep a reasonable balance. It will definitely get better, but there is no such thing as a break from the routine. Best of luck to you. You will definitely find what works for you, but it is pretty much trial and error, just like brands of eye drops.

Hi I've been dealing with Blepharitis for quite a few years now (read: forever ... ) and haven't been able to find anything that really helps. I've tried baby shampoo, prescription shampoo, wet ones, special eye treatments etc. and none of those have worked for longer periods. Recently though I found a new solution. It's a called the Style'n'Clean pen. It's basically an electric eyelashcurler but the difference is that it comes with small sponges you can attached which you can use to clean your eyes. The pen can rotate and heat up so you can clean your eyes way more effectively than anything I've ever tried. I bought it on sale where it comes with cleansing gel that is so good for my eyes. I use it every morning and it has really been a life saver. Hope that this can you. And like the two previous comments I also agree that you really shouldn't worry to much as this can worsen your Bleph. The best thing you can do is just accept that Bleph will be apart of your life now and then treat the way you find best.

I find lot eye problems are due to pollution. Read this thread it confirms....

I wish some Blep patients volunteer and do some testing.
Choose a place free from factories for 16 km circle. It should far away from major roads. You should get good water. Choose bushy (trees which releases lot of Oxygen) Stay in only fruit ,nuts and sprout diet for 16 days and under these trees during day time (7am - 5pm). During night also keep your indoor good ventilation. Your body should expose to reasonable sunlight. notice the difference and please report in this forum.

I've been to several eye doctors and they've all dismissed my issues and told me that I have dry eyes and should use lubricating drops. The last doctor I went to finally told me that I have bleph and gave me a steroid/antibiotic ointment to use for 10 days but he didn't give me any information regarding my bleph and what kind it is. I feel like everyone here has a good treatment plan while the ophthos i go to just give me preservative free oftagel or artelac, which are lubricating drops.

I live in Sweden and the only ophthalmologist that specialises in dry eyes (that I've found through google) lives in Gothenburg which is a 6-7 hour drive from where I live.

I've started taking omega 3 supplements, doing hot compresses and cleaning my eyelids. But as of yet I haven't felt much of a difference.

Anybody suddenly told that their ongoing Blepharitis may be exacerbated by Ocular Rosaea?

Steroids often cause a rebound of the condition. This I know is true from experience. You may want to ask your doctor about experimenting with AzaSITE drops. I was told not to put the drops in my eyes, but rather take one drop on my finder and rub it onto the lid and lash lines. Two days ago I had a nasty blowup with sores on my lids, by today my eyes are clear. But I'm just testing this stuff. Told much less problems with long term problems. You use it for 10 days, off a month, then back on 10 days.

For a daily cleaner try to find Avenova with Neutrox.

I have no idea what it would be called in Sweden but in the UK the NHS was prescribing the same product as NatraSan, In the US it was originally called i-Lid Cleanser with Neutrox™ but the name was changed to Avenova as the pharmaceutical company expanded.

"NovaBay's Rx only, Avenova (hypochlorous acid) very effective treatment for blepharitis, Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) and dry eye. Call 1-800-890-0329."

Hope this helps. I'm struggling too. I live in the American south, and healthcare here can be miles behind treatments available in NYC or Los Angeles for example. In some southern states, government has banned ACA so no subsidized health insurance in state. It's actually against the law to offer information about ACA in Indiana unless one knows enough to call the Federal Hotline. It's a different world - the US is like a collection of enemy countries in some cases, but we call them states.

                Max

BTW: My great grandparents immigrated to NY from Gothenburg in the 19th century.
