  • Eyes not closing properly at night

I have suffered with 'dry eyes' or 'blepharitis' or something the doctors don't recognise for very many years. I have recently come to the conclusion that my eyes don't close properly at night as they seem to pick up any rubbish going. I would like to tape them shut and I have found that cling film does the trick, but I can't find out if it is safe to exclude all air from the eyes in this way. I wonder if anyone has any experience this method or any other ideas. I find that if I use a sleeping mask, I just pull it off during the night.

    Hi Jas,

I tried press and seal and for the first week it was great but after that, it not only irritated my eyes, but they became swollen and felt as though I had pieces of glass in my eyes.

I personally do not recommend this for long term use but there are others on this site that have no problems, so I'm not sure why it works for one and not another.

I tried sleep masks as you but for me, my eyes open during sleep so the sleep mask isn't secure enough to keep my eyes closed. I tried the tape but find it doesn't work well. I tried the sleep goggles but find it too tight and it comes off during sleep if I loosen it.

So for now I'm just back to my night ointment and drops overnight.

I use a wetted nexcare knee and elbow bandage, which allows me to seal around the eyes with a small moist air pocket inside . But I haven't gotten anyone to tell me whether or not that is safe. I worry about oxygen. Especially when used with oily drops or ointment. But right now I really have no other options whatsoever. If it's not completely sealed, I wake up in a lot of pain.
