Hi,
I was just wondering if anyone has experience like me. Back in April 2004, I first experienced issues with my contact: eyes feeling too dry to handle contact and wearing would make it hard to keep eye open. I also tended to have styes often while I was wearing contacts. After seeing a number of doctors I was told I have dry eye syndrome. So I stopped wearing contacts completely and the eye discomfort (feel dry, burning sensation while using computer etc) remained. As I was working as a software engineer, I was really worried and scared since daily use of computer became a struggle. Biggest problem was burning feeling. Eye drops only offered very temporary relief. I felt hopeless and also depressed. After more than a year, I decided to go for eye surgery to fix my nearsightedness at Gimble Eye Center. Because of my severer myopia , they did Intro-ocular lens instead of LASIK. The surgery was done beginning of July and by end of July 2005, my dry eyes were completely gone! I also enjoyed the 20/20 vision without wearing glasses! Life was great again and I was really really happy. During the whole period of time, the only thing I did was theratears eye drop.
SO about a month ago I got a big new career opportunity in US (I am in Canada). Everything tells me this is something I need to take but it does require family relocation. I am the type of guy that really doesn't like changes and not to mention moving away from a place I am so comfortable with already. So after some painstaking consideration, I decided to quit my current job and accept the new job in US. I had to say even though this seems to be the right decision after quitting my old job (more than 10 years there and loved everything there) so quitting gave me a lot of stress since there are so much unknowns associated with this new job in a new country. Plus the whole family has to be resettled etc. 1 week after my resignation while I was still waiting to get started on the new job, the dry eye problem hit me again! Same thing as before, burning feeling with eyes when using computer or watching TV or driving is the biggest problem. The only thing new was it seems to affect the vision by making things blurry sometimes and blinking normally fixed it. This sent me to the bottom of a cliff as on top of the usual stress for a new job I am worried about how I can cope with it with this bad dry eye problem. I did Lipi View (a place where LipiFlow is offered) and was told my lipid layer score is way lower than normal (<40 for both eyes). So I am pretty sure I have evaporative dry eye problem. I simply couldn't believe the timing of this! I think if I had this before I quit I wouldn't have accepted the new job. Since I am already familiar with everything with my old job and my whole family has got roots in my current city so everything will be much easier to deal with.
Both times when dry eyes hit me, it's not really gradual. It's always good last week and really bad next week. If it's like last time, the worst part is the onset of it and things seemed to get better and more stable after some time. I thought really hard trying to remember how I got rid of dry eye last time. It's been so long ago. I remember things were not improving much for at least a year. Then May and June in 2005 I probably got better a bit. The surgery was July 2005 so I was guessing maybe the post-op drops helped. I phoned them and they told me they gave me vigamox and prednisolone (3 weeks in total). I looked up on the internet and it seems people used steroid like prednisolone for dry eyes. So maybe it helped me? One thing for sure is I was extremely happy in July 2005 because of the new gained great eye sight without glasses. So it can also be the happy mood affecting some hormone? I have no idea. All I know is by en dof July 2005, the dry eye that plagued me for more than a year was completely gone.
I have been in great panic and despair in the last 2 weeks ever since the relapse of dry eye. I am on Lotemax now as I told my story to a OD and she suggested we try the steroid drop for a week to see if it is the reason for my 2005 recovery. It's been 2-3 days and so far I don't think there has been any noticeable difference yet.
ANyone else has experience like this? Because of the timing, I really feel dry eye could be induced by stress. I also remember in 2005 a key thing to regain my quality of life is to accept it and maintain a good mood. So maybe the real reason for my previous recovery was the mental state? (e.g., finding happiness and remain positive)?
