Today I met with a new specialist and it was somewhat depressing. She did a new test with a Confocal Microscope. It is a high powered microscope that can see different layers of the cornea at the cellular level. She told me that my outside layer was healthy, though dry. However the nerves in the second layer were inflamed, hyper-sensitive and "looping". They really have no other treatment options for me. They are sending me to a neurology pain clinic. She believes I may benefit from from a medication that helps diabetic nerve pain. Has anyone over heard of or tried something like this?

I had MGD that was improperly treated for for 2 and a half years. By the time I was treated my nerves were, like you said, hyper sensitive. Even after having healthy glands for over a year the pain is still as severe. I tried a several neuropathic pain medications including Lyrica, Gabapentin, Amitriptylin, and Lamotrigine, I did not feel any improvement with any of these. My neurologist said that others with eye pain have been helped with these medications so its worth trying. Good luck.

I was prescribed Lamotrigine(used primarily for bipolar/seizures) which caused me to have toxic Epidermal Necrolysis which left me in the situation that I am in now. The reason I don't take medications is because of this reason. As long as you are not allergic to any of these medications you should be fine. Just always be careful when it comes to medications. Hence, why the only medication that I use is marijuana anymore. Marijuana hasn't caused me any problems unlike lamotrigine which screwed up my life.
