  • Dilated blood vessels / pink veins on white's of eye for 7-8 months (please help!)

    Hi all,

I am new to this forum and really hoping I can get some help and advice.

One day last november I woke up with extremely bloodshot eyes which was very unusual as this hadn't ever happened before. (I have just turned 22) I had no pain no itching etc, basically no other symptoms apart from the red eyes. Although this was unusual I didn't think much of it and thought it would clear up the next morning. I was wrong. The redness was still really bad, it took 3 days for me to decide to go to my gp who diagnosed me with bacterial conjunctivitis and give me eye drops which I used for 5 days.

Eventually the bloodshot appearance went down (don't know if it was the drops or just with time) but my problem is that it left behind pink veins in my eyes that have never gone away since this occured. I left my job because of how insecure I was about my eyes and now suffer from depression and anxiety. I feel as though being this young I have my life infront of me but how can I make the most of it when my eyes look like this, having to make eye contact with people etc.. I now spend most of my time indoors sulking in bed researching online to see if anything can be done about this.

7-8 months on the redness tends to be the worst as soon as i wake up and then eventually goes down after a hour or so. I have no itching or any irritation, basically no other symptoms. However although the veins are pink in colour, randomly they become red at times and become more noticable (although this only lasts a hour or so) i also get random red blotches in other parts of my eye sometimes aswell. The only thing other thing I can say I have along with this is sometimes I get little bubbles on my eyelid margin which eventually go away after a couple of days.

I have been to my GP numerous times who give me artifical tears to try which i find never seem to do anything, even though i have only used them 3 times a day (I honestly don't see why i need to use them more if my eyes don't feel dry) I then finally give up and demanded a referral to a eye doctor which i later got. This appointment was not great, the eye doctor looked at my eyes and said i have mild blepharitis and told me to use antihastime/vaconstricter eye drop for the redness which i know is not covering the underlying problem. He did not do any tests to see if my eyes are actually dry etc so i requested a second opinion.

My eyes have a glossy look to it almost like i have a thick milky coat over the whites of my eye along with the dilated blood vessels. I should also mention before the veins appeared my eyes did feel tired often but strangely since my eyes became pink/red the tired feeling has gone and my eyes feel fine, very weird.

My question is what other treatments should i try, should i try allergy drops even though i do not have any itching etc? I have also heard people who used steroid drops some times cleared their eyes for good and the redness did not come back.

Since it all started The veins always seem to be there although less noticable in the day but all of a sudden they can become inflamed for short periods of time very randomly. And yes I have like foam in the corners of my eyes! I think he give me optrex chloramphenicol drops. This was like 7 months ago. Since then I have not really used anything in my eye apart from artifical tears but never used it constantly because it doesn't seem like I need to. I went to my gp today and he prescribed me lodoxamide allergy drops along with cetirizine tablets. Should I use both and see how it goes?
