  • Has anybody had dilated red veins in sclera which eventually vanished?

    Hi,

Since November last year I woke up one morning with extremely bloodshot eyes. I was diagnosed from my GP with bacterial conjunctivitis. This lasted around 5-7 days until the redness went down but left red veins which have not gone away,
My doctor tells me to use artifical tears etc, here is a list of what I have tried:
    Warm compress + lid scrubs
Tears naturale lubricant drops (for 3 days then give up)
Theratears for dry eyes (again 3 days give up)
Nedocromil sodium for allergic conjuncitivits (5 days give up)
Baby shampoo method (If i get in eye the veins expand for about a hour)

As you can see I have not tried much since suffering from this for around 8 months, Truth is I am very wary of what I put in and around my eyes as I do not want to make things worse. My eyes feel normal, I don't have any itching, watering etc. I will mention though when my eyes were very white before this happened, my eyes would feel fatigued and tired as the day went on, maybe this could be related i dont know.

I have been to a eye doctor who did no tests whatsoever and told me to use a drop with a ashtiminime and vaconstricter in it which I never went along with as i have heard of rebound redness. There are days were my eyes don't look that bad but other days were they look awful and I hide away. I am 22 i have not worn contacts or anything. This has really got me down and affected my self esteem.

Has anybody ever got rid of visible red veins in eyes and how? I have asked for a second opinion and will ask the doc to carry out a test to see if i actually do have dry eye (although feels like I don't) I always seem to have mucus in the corners of my eye since this problem started. Every 1-2 months or so I will get a little bubble on my eyelid margin which goes after a few days and causes no problems. I have heard about steroid drops which makes the eyes white again and heard from a few people that the redness did not come back, is this something I could ask my doctor for?

    Hi Dan,

I have the exact same symptoms as you. My eyes are red and have dilated veins, accompanied by mucus in the corner. I have been on steroids (lotemax) which definitely helped with the redness; however, after a short-time of stopping the steroids, my eyes were back to there original state. Unfortunately, I have been to many different eye doctors, and it's always the same routine--prescribe steroids, eyes feel better, stop steroids, back to crappy red eyes. I currently just wash my eyelids at night with baby shampoo, which helps a little. At least your eyes don't have the associated burning that comes with redness.

Not to scare you, but I've been dealing with blepharitis for 8 years now. I've pretty much given up on the idea that my eyes will be white and clear again. The most annoying thing by far besides the burning sensation is the constant eye mucus. I'm sure you can relate talking to people and having them gesture that there's goop in your eye...

Anyways, if you have any updates please let us know!
