Doc says its because our lids don't close all the way at night. I have no idea if my lids close all the way at night. Is this the only reason why our eyes hurt so badly in the middle of the night and are bloody red when we wake up each morning?

There are other eye conditions that can cause red eyes and sore eyes in the middle of the night (speaking from experience of walking around clutching a compress and swearing about a corneal erosion at 3 a.m. this morning, thanks to RCE), but if your doctor says it is because your lids don't fully close after examination then that's probably the cause.
There are a lot of people with other conditions here who can probably tell you more about other possible causes.

All good comments above. I have the same issue, and I do have noctural lagophthalmous (NL)(lids don't shut all the way). My wife took a picture of me sleeping at on my back, and my eyes are half open. If you live with someone else, ask them to check in on you while you're asleep (in a non creepy way). Haha. Maybe they can take a picture of your lids. Add a ceiling fan blowing air all night, or a heater during the winter and you have extreme evaporation of your lids. I would recommend trying to tape one of your lids shut with surgical tape. In the morning, peel the tape off (can be a little painful, you'll probably pull a few eye lashes with it), but compare how that eye feels to the other eye that was NOT taped. Try taping the other eye the next night. Very easy way to tell if you have NL. Tranquileyes is a good product too, as PG recommended.
