  • Seeing a corneal erosion?

I had a really bad erosion in my left eye two nights ago, and it is still sore today. When I was putting my eyedrops in, I noticed that there is a patch right by the edge of the iris where the surface of the eye isn't smooth. It is crinkled and slightly dimpled, more visible over the white, and the area stings badly when the eyedrops go in. No photos at the moment, sorry, as any chance of a bright light near that eye would not be good.

I was wondering if it might actually be the erosion I can see? I was curious because most of the documents say it is nearly impossible to see an erosion with the naked eye.

For my view, I have no idea so I wouldn't be much help but please go get it checked incase it is something.

I went to the optometrists in town since they could fit me in. Apparently it is the erosion, it is just a bad one which is why part of it is visible. It seems that, yes, it is unusual to be able to see it without dye so if it doesn't heal in 72 hours, go to the specialist.

Get some serum drops made up if you are in a position to do that. I realize it is not always possible depending on location....F/G

Thanks, but this is a rather old thread. Having been through it, the doctor's advice is if the erosion is so bad you can see it with the naked eye (mine was 9 of 12 sectors) you should get medical advice immediately. Normally erosions are only detected with dye. Serum drops should be avoided unless they are preservative-free, phosophorus-free and boric acid-free since it is an open wound on the eye.

Good to know but later when the eye is healed they will probably help avoid a recurrence. I haven't had any since going on the serum drops. For sure any erosion, or suspected erosion, should have medical treatment, they eyes are nothing you want to fool around with.

Be very careful with serum drops. If you have the genetic version of RCE, they can actually make things worse as I found out the hard way. Because the cornea is ridged, they can cause the lid to seal to the eye, resulting in an erosion. I use Hylotears now, but the thicker gels/drops were actually aggravating the condition.
