  • Enucleation?

I'm wondering if anyone has opted for enucleation of an eye. I'm not seeing any other options to escape the daily pain in my rt eye and really feel like I would rather sacrifice the eye than continue to live with it. I've talked to two doctors, both unwilling to perform the procedure. Anyone considered this or found a physician willing to do it?

    Dtbriten,

I once, like you, desperately wanted my right eye out. I live in CT and went to the Boston Foundation for sight and they examined my and told me I had corneal neuralgia. I told them the pain was so bad, I would prefer to just have my eye enuculated. Dr. Jacobs, the director at BFS told me that taking my eye out would most likely not do any good - that the pain would most likely persist. I almost lost it. That was truly my last hope - to simply ditch the eye. In fact, I actually wore a patch on my right eye for about three days to see what it was like. Funny thing, the pain got better, then I developed a painful itch in the corner of my eye that would not go away for many weeks. Anyway I am deviating from what I am trying to tell you.

I have been where you are, truly. I wanted my eye out so bad I was going to take it out myself in the garage with a knife. But I couldn't do it, because I knew I would eventually pass out from the pain and then they would take me to the hospital and admit me, etc. So I ended up doing something much worse... I tried to kill myself instead. I ran the car in the garage for several hours and then used the knife I was going to use on my eye on my arm. By some miracle, I did not die - my wife found me and I was taken to the hospital - 18+ stiches in my arm then sent to the phyc ward for 2 weeks. Ya - so I know exactly where you are with the pain.

And now I am hear to tell you that it DOES get better. It can and it WILL get better for you. I do not know your story - but I do know that things WILL get better for you. Everyone told me that, and I had a real hard time believing that, trust me.

Looks like your in MA - I would highly recommend going to see Dr. Pedram Hamrah who is right there in Boston at the Mass Eye and Ear. Another option is to see Dr. ****** in Florida. I flew down to see Dr. ****** from CT - and had a couple procedures done. MG probing and my ducts cauterized. My pain (both eyes) is down to a 1 or 2. I was in pain EVERY day for 22 straight months and it was simply agonizing. I am not healed - far from healed, but I am no longer in pain. So, I can LIVE again.

Anyway, I have a lot to say and suggest but really can't tolerate this computer screen to much, but I am here to talk if you like. Let me know a good time to give you a call tomorrow and your number and I will give you a buzz if you like.

    Cheers,
    Tom

      Dtbriten,
Please don't do it. I was where you are. In such extreme pain. I would contemplate how to yank out both eyes, with a knifie or a fork. Which knife, which fork. This went on for months. I thought I would go out of my mind with the pain. It was unbearable. I couldn't believe that a compassionate God could create such pain with no hope for relief. I had suicidal thoughts. It was a living nightmare.

Somehow by a fluke I found Dr. ******. I am incredibly fortunate to live only about 1.25 hours away from his office. He saved me.

At my first appointment I asked him if he would take out both eyes. I will never forget the sound of his voice saying gently and kindly, "No, no, we won't be doing that today."

Like tommyboy, I am still not perfectly comfortable, but I am miles and miles away from where I was. Back then I couldn't even open my eyes for more than a moment. For months I lived in pain and with my eyes closed virtually all of the time. But I can function pertty well now. I can even write this.

If you can get down to Tampa, please see Dr. ****** as soon as you can. He will help. I am absolutely sure. You can have hope. You can.

And even if you can't travel to Tampa, please try contacting him. You can write to him via his website. He will respond and he will help you.

Also feel free to call me. I will send you my phone number via pm.

      Have faith. Have hope.

      And please keep us posted.

Also, you can call Dr. ******: 813-875-0000.
Tell who ever answers the phone (his staff is very helpful) what is going on, what you are thinking about, and ask to speak with Dr. ******. He spoke with me and answered questions even before I was his patient. I'm sure he will speak with you as well.

Thank you everyone for your responses. I will definitely try Dr ****** in Florida. We are actually headed down there this winter so I can give it a try. I'm going to try lipiflow in a few weeks to see if that gives me any relief. I'd like to get moisture chamber glasses but I can't get a prescription because my cornea is never in a stable condition. I've tried and when I get the glasses they are always wrong. Have any of you figured out a way to get an accurate prescription? I can't use steroids to stabilize the inflammation cause I'm a responder and I do get some relief when I wear goggles, but then I can't see w/o the prescription. TIA.
