I'm exhausted by this disease, honestly. I had a big flare up in august for 3 weeks, things calmed down, then another short setback in the end of september, and now I'm back here with severe acute pain for 6 days. This is driving me crazy, and I don't understand WHY. The pain is so intense, my eyes burn 24/24 and the discharge burn the skin around my eyes.

The only thing I've done differently in my routine is stopping doxy in october, but I'm afraid it can't be the culprit unless you can have a rebound effect after 2 months stopping it ?

Hi, there. I can't say for sure that doxycycline would be the culprit, but I do know that when I discontinued it (personal experience only) I had acne for several months, where acne had not once been a problem before. It was occasional, but not weekly. So maybe it's a matter of waiting it out?

This is just a personal experience on steroid drops, as well, and it may not be helpful. I find that the more frequent the dose, the more difficult the withdrawal. A dose in the morning seems to be adequate, but beyond that, I get a weird adverse reaction, which includes a lot of redness. For reference, I am a severe case, a scleral lens type of case.

You're not dealing with eye problems but skin problems that affect the eyes. I've had all of the symptoms as you and I am very close to being cured because I discovered the root causes. No more flare ups, no more burning eyes and very little dry eye. I will write up my story soon, all I can say is I've been through HELL just like you. Don't seek help from doctors because they know nothing about this condition. It is the rarest form of dry eye.

The only advice I can give you right now is STOP taking doxycycline because I believe it triggers this condition under very specific circumstances. I'll explain more soon.

Regarding the skin getting burned or raw around your eyes, one of my specialists told me to apply the sterile night time ointments like Genteal Tears Night-time Ointment or Refresh P.M. Sensitive to those raw parts of the skin before going to bed. She said it was like applying Aquaphor or Vaseline, but better because there are no preservatives. This did work really well for me...it healed the skin within a few days, plus helped relieve the burning.
