  • Eye drops cause excessive tearing?

Hi im a 15 year old who suffers from dry eye and the reason I dont like eye drops is because every time I put in an eye drop for dry eye it makes my eyes more sensitive like I can feel the air alot more and it makes my eyes water why does this happen? Oh and it gives no relief

Have you tried numerous eye drops? I must have tried 15 before I found the right one. And some of the ones that were not right for my eyes were VERY not right. These should be artificial tears (rewetting) only, and preservative-free.

PG is right, there are tons of eye drops to try, and only use preservative-free. If you have not seen this already, below is a helpful listing on this website of various eye drops, and the ingredients and preservatives each one contains. This way you can see which drops bothered your eyes, so you don't buy ones with the same ingredients under a different brand or name. For example, some of my eye doctors used to give me samples of various Refresh and TheraTears eye drops, which irritated my eyes. I ultimately discovered my eyes are intolerant of the ingredient CMC (carboxyl methylcellulose sodium) which both brands contain, and I have since heard of others who also have this intolerance. So I personally have to stay away from any drops with CMC.

Also FYI, if there is a Bed, Bath and Beyond store near you, they sell a wide range of eye drops as part of their in-house Harmon Drugs Store offerings at competitve retail prices. You can get drops, as well as other drug store items, for significantly less there because you can use their BBB coupons (20% off one item or $5 off $15), and at the same time the eye drop manufacturer's coupons. And you can use more than one BBB coupon at a time if you are buying multiple items, and they also will take their expired coupons. When I used to use a lot of eye drops, often I would end up saving as much as 30%-50% off their retail price at BBB....that gave me more $$ to spend on more fun things! Perhaps you can pass on this info to your parents :-)

My eye doctor agreed with me when i said,if a persons tear film is off because of one of the 3 layers, the drops can actually wash off some of the good parts of the tear film causing worse irritation. This especially happens to me if i use drops right before i close my eyes to sleep.

Yes, this happens to me too! I have to do a warm compress right before bed to get some oils and refrain from using drops, or I have eye irritation during the night.
