  • BAK Study Question

    Hello,

Does anyone have a link to any studies as to the harm BAK’s may cause, other than these two?

    2007 study

    2012 study

I am trying to get more “ammunition” for my next battle with my doctor.

    Thank you.

Hi Edan. Funny, I was just looking on-line for articles on the harmful effects of BAK, because my retina specialist just put me on some drops I noticed have .0075% BAK for a different potential eye condition. I think your two articles sufficiently explain the negative effects. In fact, I'm going to have them handy when I see my doctor in a few weeks and ask him to change my drops to something else, so thank you! But I would think our doctors would change our mediciation without making things difficult on us, when we tell them just how uncomfortable we are with the harmful side effects of BAK, unless there were absolutely no other alternatives.

In the meantime, I've been trying to minimize the BAK impact, without eliminating the effectiveness of the drops. 15 minutes after I use the drops, I rinse my eyes thoroughly with PuriLens Plus Preservative-Free saline. I wait 15 minutes because the instructions for this drop (and most other eye drops) say to wait 15 minutes before using other drops or putting on contacts.

There is an FML ointment that does not contain BAK. When I need to use a steroid (which I've also tried to minimize) I use that now. Costs me quite a bit more than the drops, but I guess that's one more reason to limit my reliance on it.

Here's a thought, rather than doing battle just tell them that you can't use it, that you are allergic to it because sooner or later if you keep using it that will become a truth.

I truly am, it will make my eyes bloodshot, inflamed and sore in a matter of hours. It has been my experience that they can always source something that is BAK free including steroids, antibiotics and I have heard of a glaucoma drop that is preservative free as well. I can tolerate other preservatives for a short period of time but absolutely can not take anything with BAK.

Thanks to all who took the time to reply to my question. I really appreciate all input.

Sorry it took so long to get back to this but my eyes were too sensitive to use the computer.
