Thanks for your update, ltree. My eyes hurt just now when I read your first set of sclerals made your eyes blood red, after wearing them for just a few hours! Given this, combined with these lenses not being very comfortable and your doctor saying the next set should not push down on your eyeballs so much, should you keep wearing them? It could have an impact on the condition of your eyes for the next lenses.

I've heard it took some people 4-5 fittings. The number of fittings not only depends on you, but the expertise of the specialist fitting you. For me, it took my PROSE doctor only one fitting.

When you get your next set of lenses, ask what changed (diameter, curvature, etc.). I've read larger lenses can be more comfortable, mines are 18mm. But of course your specialist should know what's best for you, if she has enough experience and training in sclerals. I heard the largest sclerals can be as big as 24mm or 1 inch! Can't imagine putting those in, but must be needed for certain eye conditions.

I'm sorry your blepharospasm is getting worse. I wonder if you blinking so much will affect how comfortable your sclerals feel? Are you still on those drops with BAK?

Ok, hang in there! The fact that two of your doctors no longer see dry eye symptoms (although you still feel discomfort) is a step in the right direction...it could have gone the opposite direction.

      Hello Hokucat:

It sounds like a dream that it only took one fitting for you!

I am finally seeing the practitioner again today (she was sick on the day of the previous appointment), for assessment. so hopefully a better fit is a week away.

Yes, the irritation certainly caused more forceful blinking reflexes that hurt even more... I am between a rock and a hard place, because with the work environment, the lens do offer some protection for my cornea. The current pair still irritate quite a bit, and after 4 hours I have to take them off being unable to stand them any longer.

I guess 4-5 fittings is not too bad.. if that is the case for me. I am on #2 already, and about a month into this process. The lens manufacturer offers a 3-month period within which they offer a full refund on the lens if they do not work out.. So it sounds about right.

A concern is, to accommodate my work schedule, I chose to be fitted by the associate (who is not the one listed on the Boston list), because she is available on Saturdays. This is with the understanding that she is not as experienced, so I wonder how much time I am losing there.

I am definitely not touching any BAK-based drops with a 10-foot pole anymore ;-) And thank you for the encouragement - definitely still need a lot of perserverence.

Hi ltree. Am wondering if the blepharospam will impact your ability to get the most optimal fit with the sclerals.

If the next set of sclerals is still not comfortable, I would ask to see the main doctor vs. the associate for at least for one fitting, before the three month fitting period is over. It could make a difference. Fitting expertise is key with getting sclerals right.
