  • Lyrica (Pregabalin) for Blepharospasm?

    Hello all,

I got to see opthalmologist #3 today for the first time, for DES and blepharospasm/photosensitivity (quite severe at this point). He theorized that even though I do not feel pain at all, that the pain receptors at the eye are firing off which could explain why I have blepharospasm - involuntary closing of my eyes to shut out the "pain".

He then prescribed Lyrica, a painkiller, he said, which may help. That is the only immediate solution he offered, apart from telling me to continue using the serum drops and hyaluronic acid drops I had been on (which was not enough to put the extreme symptoms under control).

I looked up side effects for this drug, which seems rather concerning. Most of the literature I find on the internet points to that it is for treating anxiety or pain. I cannot find much info on it treating blepharospasm.

More alarmingly, here is a single mention of the drug from DEZ, possibly CONTRIBUTING to photosensitivity:

if i get my magic wand. you are all top of my list x
    Any experience or comments?

Another older post that mentions this drug, for pain. But still no mention of blepharospasm.

      Hi Itree,

i have been been on lyrica (pregablin) since November 2014. I take it for a bladder condition called interstitial cystitis which causes nerve type pain....it is of no help whatsoever for my dry eye pain.

It does dull down my bladder pain, give it a go and see how you get on.

It can make you feel sleepy/drunk and a bit slow so don't be taking it last thing at night and then driving early morning!

Yes, the side effects have been terrible and unfortunately it did not help much with my condition a bit!
