  • My Story - 3 Years of Dry Eye MGD in one eye caused by a viral infection

    Hello everybody,

i am reading in this forum for almost a year now and was able to get some really helpful information out of it. Now i decided to tell you a little bit about my own Story.

I'm 32 years old and live in Germany. I'm suffering from dry eye (MGD) since 2014 (on my left eye only). My right eye has absolutely no problems.

The MGD was „apparently“ caused by a herpes simplex infection in the left eye. The ophthalmologist who disagnosted this was just wondering, why the infection did not affect the other eye as well – but he was sure anyway that it was a herpes simplex infection.

After the infection was treated with a anti viral eye ointment, the eye did start watering and was irritated constantly. It took me almost a half year to find a doctor which took care of my condition and diagnosted „postinfectious meibomian gland dysfunction“. All other doctors (maybe 3-4) send me home with the words „just wait, it’s just a little bit of a irritated tearfilm, which heals by itself!“.

Since i’ve got the right diagnostic, i‘ve tried all kinds of artificial tears (examples: Artelac Lipids, Hylo-Gel, Systaine, Cationorm, Tears Again, etc. etc…), along with Ciclosporine A drops twice daily, eyelid hygiene once a day and warm compress before going to bed (i’ve also tried Blephasteam goggles instead of compress), topical azithromycin (Azyter) therapy and Omega 3. Every treatment happens only on the left eye. My right eye is absolutley perfect. This is also something i’ve never read in any other post here before. Some have it more worse in one eye, some the same grade in both, but not „only in one eye“?

Im working on the computer as a programmer the whole day which is a "pain in the ass" when you have this condition. Almost every morning my left eyelids are sticked together and this spring i was not willing to tolerate the condition anymore and started to give some „advanced tratments“ a try.

I had the LipiFlow procedure done on my left eye in May 2017 in Munich. Effect: Nothing. Im not sure if this machine is more a „money jerk machine“ than a medical device. I’ve waited for 2 Months and hoped to get any improvement out of this - but nothing happend. The only „good“ thing i can tell about it is, that now i know more about my meibomian gland condition because of the „LipiView“. A few of the Glands seem to be atrophied and most of them are secreting only a very little amount of oil. But honestly, looking back, this is something i’ve could tell myself by looking into a magnifying mirror. I simply didn’t really know how to look at them. They also noticed that my eyelid is not closing to 100% during some of my blinks.
After giving Lipiflow a try, i tried the probing procedure in early August 2017. The ophthalmologist did only probe the glands in the left eye without expressing them or any further treatment. This relieved my symptoms maybe by 5-10% but was really not a breakthrough as well.

Now my ophthalmologist prescribed me doxycyline oral 50mg per day in combination with eyelid hygiene, warm compress, ciclosporine A drops and artificial tears. He said „maybe it is some kind of bacterial infection, let’s try doxyciline“

So for now i think i am almost on the end of the road reagarding actual treatments. Nothing helped noticeably so far what is really strange in my opinion. Also herpes simplex as cause for MGD in addition in only one of both eyes seems to be a bit of an unusual case?

I would really appreciate to hear some ideas regarding my story which i maybe did not pay attention so far. If someone has further questions regarding my treatments, feel free to ask!

    Best wishes,
    Danny

    Hi Danny

Your case seems special. What helped me without doxy, circlosporine, Azyter etc:

Lid cleanser: not all cleansers are the same, based my own experience. My new strategy: HOCI + tea tree oil.
    'pure' Hypochlorous Acid, like Avenova.

Omega 3 + 6/GLA: is more effective than Omega 3 alone -- thin the oil

sticky eyes in the morning: wash eyes with warm running water, say 10 times

Without knowing exact causes/problems, hard to achieve results. With right order, timing and combination, we can achieve more!
Have you ruled out potential causes (Vit. D, A. diet, allergy etc..).

Good to get 2nd opinion to detect the causes.
