  • Does having low tear volume leave you more susptible to UV sun damage to your eyes?

Ever since I have started to suffer from dry eyes,, I find if I am not strict on having sunglasses on all the time when on holiday. My eyes hurt and vison goes really disorientated. I believe this is because my eyes get sunburnt. Any one else had this problem with dry eye and sun exposure?

I believe sun sensitivity is the early sign of dry eye. But my doctors did not detect it.

When I had severe dry eyes (both MGD and aqueous deficiency), the sun and fluorescent lights especially bothered my eyes. I also had to always wear wrap around sunglasses outside and often inside. Apparently one's tears protect the eyes not only from elements like wind, air conditioning, dust, etc., but also sunlight and harsh indoor lighting. Now that my eyes are better, I don't feel the need to wear sunglasses at all anymore, but often still do outside to continue to protect from the UVs.

So my eyes never got burnt from the sun, but keep wearing your sunglasses, given your condition. Get wrap around sunglasses or air shield for added protection. There are clear ones available too.
