My ANA results come back high so my doctor ordered blood tests for Sjögren’s. Haven’t gotten the results yet, but he now wants me to do a lip biopsy. I’ve read that sometimes this biopsy can be painful and even damaging, with long lasting problems. I’d like to hear what people’s experiences have been with the lip biopsy. Thanks!

Hi Norabo
There is (NEW) Sjö Diagnostic (blood) Test (Bausch + Lomb) to detect biomarkers for Sjörgen’s syndrome/SS
It is a valuable diagnostic tool & the advantage is it can detect SS 4.5 years early than the traditional test, but seems only available in USA.

Correct me if I'm wrong but it sounds like all of your current tests point to Sjogrens? Then why is your doctor asking for a lip biopsy? Yes, they are supposed to be painful and not ideal -- so if you already have all of the signs, I'd consider it a go -- how much more do you need for confirmation? My initial tests were negative and my doctor still said it wasn't worth it to do the lip biopsy; I can't imagine why yours is saying have it when all of your tests are saying you have Sjogrens.

If you can get a definitive diagnosis without it I would go with that, if not do the biopsy. I had negative blood work so had the biopsy and it was positive and now I know for sure. To me it was worth it. It was no worse than dental work and it did leave me with a small numb spot on my lip which I hardly notice unless I am feeling for it and now 7 years later is it barely preceptable.....F/G
