  • Recurrent Cornea Erosion. Permanent Vision Changes? Vision rapidly worse each day

Cross-post from the Facebook group. But I thought this question could still find an answer.

After an erosion, I have frequently had my vision affects (blurry, halos) for often a few days or the longest up to two weeks duration.

Since my last painful erosion (about 2 months ago), my vision has completely changed. But in a strange way. I know that abrasions / erosions can affect vision, however, my vision is often times 95 - 100% clear when I wake up. Then rapidly though becomes more blurry throughout the day.

What's been happening is after I wake up, my vision in my RCE affected eye is about '95 - 100% clear' for a few minutes. But then only 15 - 30 minutes later, my vision in RCE affected eye is about '70 - 85% clear.' My lack of clarity in my RCE affected eye gets progressively worse throughout the day. Normally 2 hours later, the vision seems only '50 - 60% clear,' and 8 hours later it's only '20 - 30% clear.'

I'm near-sighted and wear prescription eye-glasses. My vision only becomes blurry for things further away, especially I test it with text on the T.V which is about 1.5 meters (about 5 feet) away from the couch where I sit. For the entire day though, my laptop which is less than .5 meters (1.5 feet) away from my eyes the vision is mostly fine. Except I notice some 'double text' when viewing white text on a black background.

So my question is this.. I've had RCE for 1.5 years. I have had about 6 'severe' morning erosions during this time, and maybe 15 very minor erosions while waking up. Often times my vision is affected or changed, but normally my vision is only different for 5 - 6 days from a severe erosion or only 1 day or a minor erosion. However, this is now 2 months and my vision is completely different. When I did an eye check-out the other day, we did a vision test.. and the grade of my eye prescription in RCE affected eye is different now when we tested it in the middle of the afternoon. The doctor recommended waiting 3 months though before I go out and buy new lenses with the new grade / prescription.

    My questions are this..
    1) Can RCE really permanently change your eye-glass prescription / grade?

    2) Why does my vision get progressively worse throughout the day? It starts off being clear, but then becomes almost totally blurry for things far away, but things close are not affected.

    3) Is 3 months a good amount of time to wait to accept that yes RCE has completely changed my eye-glass prescription, and to buy new lenses with the new prescription?

    4) How can the vision change problem with RCE be solved?
I already try to prevent erosions, etc. with numerous eye drops and gels, yet I don't have any way to prevent my vision from changing.

I forgot to add.. I'm 36 years old. Normally my vision grade / prescription has changed a little bit every few years since I was a child. But this is a very noticeable vision grade / prescription change in a relatively short period of time (2 months)

      Hi
I had RCE too for some years but no vision issue, did PTK laser fixed the problem.
I have read something recently, dry eye (could) lead to RCE which I believe so too - but all doctors did not detect it until PTK. Suggest ask dr examine dry eye issue, especially with staining (which is very important especially because of RCE) - none of doctors did it when I had RCE.

      lissamine green and fluorescein staining
''clinical signs are important for diagnosis of DED. For example, lissamine green and fluorescein staining may
reveal dry, devitalized, or dead cells and areas devoid of mucin on the cornea and conjunctiva''

Hi RCE37. Have you gone to see a specialist to get a second opinion, to see if there might be a more serious condition, like Limbal Stem Cell Deficiency, or something else, that could be causing these vision changes? One of my friends had constant abrasions and erosions in one eye, and then one day her vision in that eye starting getting worse. She went for a second opinion, and it turned out to be LSCD. I've read something like LSCD is often missed and mis-diagnosed, and like almost everything else, if caught earlier, the prognosis is better.

Her doctor also has her using autologous serum tears, and getting fitted for a scleral lens, to help prevent further damage. I don't know if you have looked into sclerals, but they have been increasingly used to help manage dry eye symptoms, including patients with RCE. I wear mines 12+ hours a day, and it helps a lot. Not everyone can tolerate sclerals, but if you can, it might help manage your condition. There are several different brands...below is a good scleral description for Boston PROSE sclerals, which I wear and they have very competent fitters, which is key. There are also other brands/fitters many in this forum have had great experience with, like Dr. Gemoules LaserFit and EyePrintPro.
