  • Been suffering from inflammatory dry eye for 2 years, need some advice

So I’ve been suffering from inflammatory aqueous deficient dry eye for 2 years now. What I mean by inflammatory is that in my case the dryness sometimes leads to really horrible surface (cornea) inflammations. When my eyes do end up like that, they feel like theyre on fire and like they’re full of thumbtacks/being stabbed, and my vision is super blurry and around 2 feet long.

So...it’s bad. I’ve been using restasis for about a year and a half, and it’s really helped with the everyday dryness and pain but it’s sort of plateaued now. I also use hylo gel drops and for worse days a thick gel called occunox.

Anyway, more specifically. Everytime my eyes get inflamed I need a steroid to clear it. I’ve used Tobradex (Tobramycin/Dexamthasone) but that was a particularly bad one, and since then FML (fluorometholone). Issue is that I don’t have a long term prescription for any steroid. So everytime my eyes end up like that I have to claw my way (half blind mind you) through the emergency room only for an ophthalmologist to inevitably inspect me and perscribe me a steroid. My regular ophthalmologist is really excellent, but up to now he’s been resistant to prescribing steroids (mind you I’ve never seen him with my eyes in that state). What I’d like to get is a perscription for a steroid on file, so that if my eyes ever end up like that I can avoid the whole emergency room part/appointment, pick it up at a pharmacy and use it under my ophthalmologists direction. So, what should I ask him for?

Also, are their any kind of tips for dealing with this kind of dry eye? I’ve noticed that nearly everytime my eyes end up inflamed it’s after I got very little sleep the night before, like a couple of hours and then I wake up with a horrible steroid required inflammation.

Im 18 and male by the way.

Have you made the Opthalmologist aware that you have had to go to the emergency room for this before? I would think if you explained the situation and that another doctor has given you steroids in an emergency room setting he would concede and write you the prescription. Let him know that you understand the risks, but would rather not have to keep going to the emergency room as that has to be expensive. If not maybe call him next time and see if he has an emergency slot open so he can see for himself.

        Hi CuCornea334,

I can relate to your problems, as I've experienced similar treatment in the past. I would ask your ophthalmologist to consider prescribing Lotemax indefinitely, and have regular check-ups. Although not optimal, Lotemax is a milder steroid which has helped me to keep my inflammations down.
