One night I decided to massage my eyelid sideways instead of up and down. Starting from the inside sliding my finger across my eyelid right to left. I found immediate relief. The pain wasn't gone but it was bearable. I did this the next 3 days and I was able to bare it for once. One morning I wake up and it's back to square one. The massage no longer helps. If anything I feel like it's making it worse. My eyelid is puffy and it's back to unbearable. I can't help but ask what happened. Why all the sudden I'm back to where I was at and the massaging no longer helps. It's so frustrating. To find relief thinking you may have found a solution only to find out it was nothing.

Hi DKott,
I know the feeling. I wish I had an answer for you, but I found myself asking that same question this morning. I started having dry eye symptoms in May of this year. I started using the castor oil as recommended by some users and found miraculous relief for months. Unfortunately when the fall weather hit I went back to square one. I gave up the castor oil and started doing 100 other things which helped improve my condition relatively quick and then again I woke up today feeling it pretty significantly. I haven't changed anything so I'm not sure if its the weather or what.. I dont know!!
Are you doing anything else other than the massage? Are you doing that after the warm compress?

Sadly that is the nature of dry eye. If something is helping though I wouldn't recommend abandoning it just because you hit a down spot. If it is making you worse, then by all means don't keep doing it. I am finding this time of year very challenging if you are living in a colder climate as the air is so dry and there is always warm air circulating. Malls and public buildings are the worst.

The weather definitely made a big difference. I just don't understand how my eye is half way decent and than 30 minutes later it's bad. What is happening in such a short time soon to make it change so quickly I feel I'll never know. It probably doesn't help I work in a building with 60 dogs. Dry air and hair floating around.

If you can maybe get a HEPA Air Filter in the building with all the dogs, as that will attract the dog hairs to it so that less goes in your eyes. You can also try moisture chamber glasses or just wraparound glasses as a shield. Here's a video showing what someone's HEPA flter picked up after a month in a house with 2 dogs and 2 cats:

i think you need to stop bacteria growing on the eye lid, see :
