  • questions on eye drops

    Hi All

    Some questions re lubricating drops:
    * On a good day, when adding routine optive preservative-free drops, it would trigger the object in eye feeling. is this normal?
    * when trying different drops to see which work bet, how much time should one give the new drops to take affect?
    * is it true that patanol may not be used long term and is there an alternative for it? it works wonders for me, but I'm told by several specialists (my gp and my ophthalmologist) to not use it unless absolutely necessary.
    * there are several types of optive drops, the difference explained here (http://www.independentpharmacist.co....rops-explained). question is if its harmful to use the triple action one as opposed to the lubricating one as well.

thanks all. should I rather split the questions into separate threads?

    Hi
if you try a few days but still no good feeling, maybe your eyes are allergies to them??
I tried one drop pf but gave me headache twice.
if you have MGD, many docs in USA recommend Systane Balance (with minor preservative), invented by Dr Korb, and Retaine MGD - I have tried both and they are good.

systane looks good. ill see if I can find them at a local pharmacy. I dotn think I'm allergic to the optive, but I want to try alternatives for better results and I want to understand why my eyes sometimes go worse.

Systance Balance preservative is very small amount - dont think it is that dangerous.
I have been using it for nearly 2 years on and off and my eyes like it - for long term maybe NOT a good idea.

Many doctors in USA recommend it too. It was invented by Dr Korb, the inventor of LipiFlow.

I found Theratears to be the most comfortable back when I was still using eye drops. They are also supposed to have a lower osmolarity which is said to be better for dry eye.

The link below has a good chart comparing the different eye drops and their ingredients,ph and osmolarity

            researchgate.net/publication/232714906_Choice_of_Artificial_Tear_Formulation_fo r_Patients_With_Dry_Eye

“"Changes in tear osmolarity may be a primary factor in the initiation of dry eye and therefore may be an ideal diagnostic marker. A common feature of dry eye is corneal and conjunctival epithelial damage, which may be triggered by increased osmolarity of the tear film.
Accordingly, increased osmolality has been measured in tears from dry eye patients wearing contact lenses. Thus, a potential treatment for dry eye is to lower tear osmolarity using hypo-osmolar eye drops, such as TheraTears. Successful use of hypo-osmolar eye drops has been observed in trials conducted by Gilbard and Rossiand Lenton and Albietz.
From the patient’s point of view, hypo-osmolar eye drops were more effective in relieving symptoms, although contrasting results were reported by Wright et al.”"
