  • Xiidra will be available in Canada early 2018

    Just found out this.

''Xiidra® Approved by Health Canada To Treat the Signs and Symptoms of Dry Eye Disease''

Xiidra®* (Lifitegrast Ophthalmic Solution 5%) Approved by Health Canada To Treat the Signs and Symptoms of Dry Eye Disease
Canada approval represents Shire's first international market authorization for Xiidra outside of the United States.

Cambridge, MA - January 3, 2018 - Shire plc (LSE: SHP, NASDAQ: SHPG) announced today that Xiidra® (lifitegrast ophthalmic solution 5%), a twice-daily eye drop solution indicated for the treatment of the signs and symptoms of dry eye disease in adults,1 has been approved in Canada, marking the first international approval for the treatment outside of the U.S. Xiidra is the first new prescription medication for dry eye disease to be approved in Canada in seven years,2 providing patients with an effective treatment option for this common eye disease.3

Dry eye disease is one of the most prevalent conditions seen by eye care professionals and may affect up to 29 per cent of Canadians.4 The condition significantly affects vision-related quality of life and may impact activities such as reading, using computers, driving and watching television.5

"Many Canadians aren't aware of the chronic nature of dry eye disease, and the potential impact it can have on their eye health," says Dr. W. Bruce Jackson, an ophthalmologist specializing in cornea and external disease with a special or primary interest in ocular surface disease and dry eye disease. "The approval of Xiidra in Canada gives patients a new option to address both the signs and symptoms of dry eye disease."

Xiidra will be available for patients in Canada in early 2018.

    Xiidra in Clinical Trials
A larger reduction in eye dryness score (EDS) favouring Xiidra was observed in all four efficacy studies at week six and week 12. In two clinical trials, symptom improvement was noted at two, six and 12 weeks. A long-term safety study randomized to either Xiidra (n=220) or placebo (n=111) over 360 days found Xiidra to be generally well-tolerated with no serious treatment-emergent ocular adverse events.

Thank you for posting this!!! I am still excited although I haven’t heard too many good things about the drug. Have you tried it? Most people on here, from what I read said it made them worse. Dr Bruce Jackson who is quoted in the article was my doctor! So sad he is retired now He was amazing. Anyway yeah I’ll likely try it.

      Hi Faith
No, I have not tried it, but all I have heard/read from American doctors is, it helps and works faster too.
Some people do not find it helps likely they have other issues??

I wonder when it will be available to prescribe. I am kind of excited to try it but wouldn’t stop Restasis as I am just tolerating it. Also, I have used lotemax for many years once per day on most days. Yes my doctor knows and I am not a steroid responder. But anyway I am starting to think I may be intolerant to the BAK in it. Hopefully Xiidra helps me ‍♀️

My Dr (Richard Maharaj) said in approximately 4 wks available in pharmacy. I'm going to be put on dual therapy of restasis + xiidra + ipl. I seem to be improving on ipl + restasis atm.

I forget if I asked you Faith1989, are you on autologous as well? I'm on that as well. I'm currently on restasis + ipl + autologous + warm compress. I've improved a little bit the last few months, not sure which treatment is helping the most, but I suspect each helps a little bit.

deep_dry_eye I have been on 100 percent serum but stopped as it was hard to travel to have them made and didn't feel they were worth it. Where do you get the IPL done? I couldn't find anywhere in Ontario where they do it. I tried to get the probing done, but the doctor would not do it as he said my glands are open. The problem was they were not producing good oil which he said could not be fixed by probing. I have rosacea so thats my main issue. Its funny because my facial symptoms are so incredibly mild, you cannot really tell.

Albert Ng has IPL in Toronto -- you can PM me for cost.

If you are in Toronto area I can let you know where to get Autologous as well.

My local costco said they should have Xiidra in stock next week according to their supplier.

If you have rosacea, I suspect you will be more likely to respond positively to IPL. I have no rosacea and I believe (without proof) that I am responding to IPL.

I've been using Xiidra since September of last year. I can say that it has helped overall but there are times when I have had setbacks. I found some great comments on this site called the peoples pharmacy. One of the problems with dry eye zone is there are too many subcategories. Here are 80 comments to read.

Does any Canadian have luck getting this filled? I have a prescription but I can't find a pharmacy/supplier which stocks it. Costco and Shoppers dont have it.

Edit: Shoppers has it, what you need to do is ask them to check their secondary supplier, and they can order it in for you.
