I finally fixed my problem. I am sharing this because I suspect lots of people may have the same problem as me, but it is being missed by their ophthalmologists. I'm making this succinct because I want you to read the entire thing.
Symptoms: Red Burning eyes 24/7.
Duration: 8 years
The only alleviating thing that works was Castor oil before bed. This helped with the pain, not the redness
Treatments: I used 0.025% Briminodine solution to treat the redness daily for 1 year
Hot masks don't work. Sometimes makes it feel worse.
Diagnosis:
1) Blepharitis (wrong)
2) MGD dysfunction (wrong)
Both diagnoses are wrong. I've had my tear film tested, and once it was found unstable, the other time it was found to be fine. A flare up can make it LOOK like you have a problem with your glands, when really thats just secondary to the real problem.
I met a great ophthalmologist who noticed something everyone else had missed. There are dry-eye symptoms concentrated on my lower, medial side of my eye especially. The sclera covered by my upper-eye lid was perfectly fine. This tells us that I may not be closing my eyes entirely when I sleep.
So, I taped my eyes shut at night. This worked ONCE, then it stopped working. I had a taste of what life could be like.
Then I figured it out. When I sleep at night, my eyes appear fully shut. Even if you look at me, you wouldn't notice unless you REALLY knew what to look for. Heres what to look for:
The medial side of my eyelids that seals just the "caruncle" peak open just a sliver and expose a THIN slice of that mucosal surface of the caruncle when I sleep. Its such a small sliver, I can't even believe this had any effect on my eyes. When I tape my eyes shut, I have to be sure that I tape shut & cover the most medial part of my eyelid. When I do this, my eyes are near perfect in the morning. I don't even have to use eye drops.
I'm really lucky to have discovered this for myself. I imagine that many people would have tried taping their eyes shut (and missed the key location) and convinced themselves that their eyelids are not the problem.
I hope this helps someone break their curse so they can live life to the fullest. Please let me know if this helps you.
