Dry eyes affecting eyesight?

Hi,

I'm curious if it is common for people with dry eyes to have bad eyesight, or maybe feel that their eyesight is deteriorating? Ever since I got diagnosed with MGD, I have been really paranoid about my eyesight deteriorating. I have been to several eye doctors and opticians and they told me that nothing seems to be wrong with my eyes, and that my eyesight has not changed much for 4 years. I was told that my eyesight is even good enough to drive a car without glasses; however, I constantly feel that my eyesight is getting worse. It is better at times, and I think that maybe it has to do with my computer use and use of eye drops.

I was told the same thing. But I know that my eyesight gets worse the longer I use my eyes. If I drive or read for more than ten or fifteen minutes, my vision starts to get blurry, and I have some double vision. It gets better again after I put in drops and rest my eyes, but as soon as I start using them again, my vision deteriorates. I can never reproduce these symptoms at the ophthalmologist's office. According to my vision tests, there has been very little change in my vision over the last few years.

I have been wearing PROSE scleral lenses for nearly a year now, and it has greatly improved my vision. When my lenses are in, I can read and drive without the vision deterioration. When i take them out at night and try to read for a while, my vision gets blurry again.

I think it depends how damaged is your cornea. In my case my vision always gets worse after an corneal erosion. The more severe erosion the more deteriorated vision. I can definitely see a change in my vision. My ophthalmologist refused to give me a new prescription for glasses because he said my vision is deteriorated due to recurrent corneal erosion and dry eye syndrome. And when I asked if the vision stabilizes over time he said that it’s hard to say with dry eye syndrome… Well, I have better days when my eyesight is better and then I have days when my eyesight is deteriorated…

So if you feel your vision gets worse sometimes it’s definitely not just in your head. Dry eyes and damaged cornea can deteriorate your vision.

I'm wearing contacts now (they help with the irritation) but I do notice a difference as they dry out with my vision, and as the day progresses. sometimes with just my glasses on I will feel I'm not seeing as well, maybe because of the dryness and they can be so irritated. I just got the book by Dr. Lackany (spell?) and he mentioned that many with dry eyes who may not even know they are dry (wish I was there) will find that at each visit they are getting new prescriptions. I know that for many years it seemed that every time I went to the eye doc I would get a slightly different lens.

I think think for me it is most likely caused by dry eyes, as my eyesight is better at times, similar to how the severity of my dry eyes vary. Sometimes, though, I'm wondering if something is wrong and perhaps the eye doctors have just not detected it? But then I remind myself that my eyesight is not so bad, and it has probably not changed much since I first got glasses five years ago. I read somewhere that one should go once a year to check ones eyeglass prescription, and I can still use my first glasses without any noticeable difference in eyesight. A year ago, I got a new eyeglass prescription, but the optician told me that my values had not changed much.

My eyesight does not get blurry after reading for fifteen minutes, but I definitely feel tired in the eyes; however, after sitting for a couple of hours in front of the computer I can definitely feel that my vision gets blurry. I have also been thinking that my eye drops make my vision blurry. Anyhow, I think these kind of things are like when you have a headache and go around believing that is is something really serious. If the doctors tell you that nothing is wrong, I guess the only thing to do is to stop thinking about these things, unless the symptoms get really serious.
