  • Azyter helping third time round

I know there have been quite a few threads about Azyter (1.5% Azithromycin) or Azasite (1% Azithromycin in Durasite) but I thought I'd share that it has now helped me a little when I was sure before that I couldn't tolerate it.

My MG's have been clogged for a long time. When my ophth tried to express them 3 weeks ago he had to press really hard and thick white meibum/oil was released. I have never been able to see anything when expressing the glands at home even after 6 months of Doxycycline, omega 3 oils and warm compresses or Blephasteam goggles. For the first time after 10 days of using Azyter, twice a day for 3 days then only at night I was able to see slightly yellow oil expressed from the glands. Now it is getting a little clearer.

By no means am I cured as I have AD too with an almost non existent Schirmer's but this has given me a little hope. I was originally advised to use it for 30 days then if it worked have a month off then on again but I'm still unsure of this as I've seen lots of different usage guidelines.

Btw, I use a clean finger to rub along the lash lines so some does go on to the eye surface but I think for me this is better than dropping it straight in the eye as I have such a poor tear film (TBUT under 3 secs) that it burned for hours after I did it that way.

Yes, we've used Azyter twice in short course eg 6 days - 2/day for 3 days, 1/day for 3 days. Second time, we repeated that one week later to be sure. This is to eg clear infected chalazia from p&p periorificial rosacea dermatitis for a teenager. I really liked to use it like that in short course - we've had clear MGs for a few months after, even battling this p&p rosacea.

She said it stung like h*ck day 1, then OK day 2. For this purpose of clearing the MGs, I've been thinking it's not been needed so much on the eye surface and will creep on anyway, so we buffered first with saline a few minutes beforehand to avoid the stinging. Also we wipe it along the eyelid margins like Lizlou does if it's been uncomfortable, otherwise just bung it in sac under lower eyelid as normal.

Azithromycin is supposed to penetrate and hang about in soft tissue around 5 days (PubMed).

For me, it's about not changing the eye surface and mucosa and natural symbiots too much, some of which help with immunity. With the other antibacs we've always been prescribed tapering doses in 4wk or 2wk steps. Also making sure the bugs don't evolve to be resistant. Azithromycin is one of the few antibacs still working against MRSA, for example.

hello,i used Azyter too on my eye lids today,it,s the best antibiotic for our" bugs" and has anti inflamatory properties too...i reqd the tewt, ent has to be no more than 3 days...it can be repeated ,of course...The studies were made with Azasite (which was designed to be use on the eyelids, but i think Azyter will work too...burning in the eyes and blurred vision, but definetely felt its effect on blepharitis...
What i wanted to ask you is if you used other eye drops when using Azyter...arrificial tears? or cortisone drops? And if you had some systemic or localnside effects from it.( i have pain and soreness in my nose and throught & ears and some nausea and GERD// i know the dose is minimal, but i,m very sensitive to antibiotics//

        Hello,

Just a piece of pathophysiology but hope it helps: either Azyter (1.5% Azithromycin) or Azasite (1% Azithromycin in Durasite) could be very helpful in alleviating dry eye syndrome not as much as antibiotics but by modifying and improving the meibomian glands functions so that these medications improve the quality of tear film by improving the secretions quality.

        Best wishes and stay well,

Thank you,dr Irina Ganelis, ,.please tell me,when using Azyter( witch stings and makes blurred vision) are we allowed to use artificial tears too? or Lotemax? or Restasis? i couldn,t find any relief with anything yet,so i started with Azyter...my greatest problem is that all the artificial tears i tried ( more than 80 brwnds) seem to dry my eyes even more and some of them even harm them ! the best i feel when i don,t use anything, but i can,t resist more than one day...i have Sogren disease ...the only thing that helps me a little is the petrolatum ointment Soothe from Baush& Lomb...but it dries me up next day even more...and i have little stones / like tiny crystals and have to remove them by expressing my lacrimal glands// hurts a lot // not any eye doctor couldn,t teach me what to do about that and how to manage it

Erlai, i was only able to get it through my Ophthalmologist originally and then through my GP once she had received a letter from my Ophthalmologist. I know some people in the UK have asked for a prescription and been told they can't have it. If it's available where you are I would suggest taking a printout of some studies that show it's effectiveness and that it is now widely used in the US (Azasite).

Distributors are here http://www.laboratoires-thea.com/THE...le/menu_id.91/. Hospital pharmacies have been the best at obtaining medicines for us. Some independent pharmacies would do it, subject to local regulation.
